THE STUDENT SECTION SHOW THEIR LOVE, WITH KIND OF CHEERS, RINGING A SMILE TO THOSE FACES. RETIRING SOON, AND I WOULD LIKE TO SHOUT HIM OUT, AND EVERYTHING HE HAS DONE FOR THIS WEST LAKE COMMUNITY. REGARDING THE DANCE RESULTS, OVER 1100 TICKETS WERE SOLD, MAKING IT ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL. THE THEME WAS CONTINUED WITH HUGE POSTERS WITH RETRO MIAMI THEME, AND MUSIC THAT GOT THE CROWD GOING CRAZY. COMING FROM SOMEONE THAT HAS ATTENDED EVERY SINGLE DANCE, EVERY SINGLE YEAR OF MY HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE, I CAN CONFIDENTLY SAY THAT THIS HAS BEEN THE MOST FUN ONE BY FAR. SPEAKING OF ELECTIONS, I KNOW THAT THERE ARE MANY OUT THERE WHO ARE STILL PROCESSING THE NATIONAL FRONT, AND I THINK REGARDLESS OF ANYBODY'S INDIVIDUAL STANCE, I JUST WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO ARE -- WHO ARE IN FEAR RIGHT NOW AND MAYBE HAVING SOME GRIEF, INCLUDING STAFF AND STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. AS I'VE SAID MANY TIMES, I FEEL VERY LUCKY TO BE PART OF A DISTRICT THAT IS COMMITTED TO CREATING SAFE AND INCLUSIVE SPACES FOR ALL STUDENTS, SO I ENCOURAGE ANYONE WHO FEELS THEY NEED SUPPORT TO REACH OUT TO A TRUSTED ADULT AT YOUR SCHOOL SITE. THERE ARE SO MANY TALENTED STAFF AT OUR SCHOOL SITES AND IN OUR DISTRICT OFFICE WHO SEE YOU AND WANT TO SUPPORT YOU AND WANT YOU TO FEEL WELCOME AND FEEL SAFE BEING HERE AND BEING YOURSELF. SO, I ALSO JUST WANTED TO GIVE A SHOUTOUT, NOT REALLY SHOUTOUT, BUT MY -- MY DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO ANY OF OUR CVUSD FAMILIES WHO WERE IMPACTED BY THE FIRES IN CAMARILLO. I KNOW THAT WE HAVE SOME FAMILIES THAT WERE IMPACTED BY THAT. IT WAS REALLY, REALLY NICE TO BE AT THE "NEWSIES" PERFORMANCE, [02:20:03] THE THURSDAY NIGHT PERFORMANCE, AND ONE OF THE CAST MEMBERS HAD LOST THEIR HOME, AND SO THE CAST CAME OUT INTO THE AUDIENCE AND ASKED FOR A COLLECTION FROM THE AUDIENCE TO SUPPORT THAT FAMILY, SO IT WAS REALLY NICE TO SEE THAT SUPPORT AND THAT CARING IN THE WAKE OF A REALLY -- YOU KNOW, A TRAGEDY. SO, IT WAS A VERY BUSY OCTOBER, BUT I'M GOING TO MOVE ON TO NOVEMBER. JUST SHARE ABOUT A COUPLE THINGS THAT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SEE. THE CVUSD BREAKTHROUGH PROGRAM HAS RECENTLY HOSTED A COUPLE OF TRULY AMAZING PARENT EDUCATION WORKSHOPS. THE OCTOBER WORKSHOP FOCUSED ON DRUG USE AND ADDICTION. AND THE NOVEMBER WORKSHOP WAS CALLED, I THINK, "RESILIENCE IN GRIEF" AND I KNOW THESE AREN'T NECESSARILY -- THEY DON'T SOUND LIKE HAPPY, UPLIFTING TOPICS, BUT THEY'RE SO INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT FOR ALL OF US TO UNDERSTAND FOR THE HEALTH OF OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES AND OUR COMMUNITY. THESE WORKSHOPS BROUGHT IN FOLKS WITH EXPERTISE IN THEIR RESPECTIVE AREAS, AND THEY WERE INFORMATIVE, THEY WERE THOROUGH, THEY WERE THOUGHTFUL. THE DRUG USE AND ADDICTION WORKSHOP INCLUDED A RESOURCE FAIR, AND THERE WERE MANY AGENCIES THAT WERE PRESENT TO SHARE INFORMATION AND SUPPORT. THANK YOU TO THOSE AGENCIES. THE GRIEF WORKSHOP WAS RUN BY A LOCAL NONPROFIT CALLED CHILDHOOD MATTERS AND THAT INCLUDED HANDS- ON ACTIVITIES THAT ENABLED THOSE PRESENT TO NOT ONLY HAVE SOME CONCRETE AND EASY WAYS TO WORK THROUGH THE GRIEF PROCESS FOR THEMSELVES BUT ALSO TO HELP THEIR CHILDREN. SO, THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY WHO HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN PLANNING THOSE EVENTS, WHO PARTICIPATED IN THOSE OFFERINGS, AND I HOPE ANYBODY OUT THERE LISTENING WILL KEEP AN EYE OUT TO WATCH THE SCHEDULE FOR FUTURE OFFERINGS. THEY WERE REALLY, REALLY VALUABLE. MONDAY, I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY -- THE PLEASURE OF ATTENDING THE CVUSD TRANSITIONS NIGHT FOR FAMILIES OF STUDENTS WITH IEPS AS THEY LOOK INTO MOVING ON TO MIDDLE SCHOOL OR HIGH SCHOOL. I KNOW THIS IS REALLY HELPFUL EVENT FOR PARENTS, ESPECIALLY THOSE INCOMING MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILIES, BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW HOW STRESSFUL THAT IS. IEP OR NOT, IT IS A STRESSFUL TIME. AT LEAST IT WAS FOR ME WITH MY KIDS. LAST NIGHT, I WAS AT SEQUOIA'S FUTURE PARENTS NIGHT AND I WILL SHARE WITH YOU THAT IF I WERE A POTENTIAL SEQUOIA PARENT, I WOULD BE SO EXCITED AFTER ATTENDING. IT WAS REALLY GREAT TO HEAR ABOUT THE INTENDED EVENTUAL TRANSITION TO THE IBMYP PROGRAM, THE BLOCK SCHEDULE, AND SO MUCH MORE. STUDENTS WERE PART OF THE EVENING. SINCE LAST BOARD MEETING, PAST TWO WEEKS, I ATTENDED THE AFRICAN AMERICAN DOC MEETING AND THE DLAC, DISTRICT ENGLISH LEARNERS MEETINGS. AS ALWAYS, GETTING TO HEAR DIRECTLY FROM ENGAGED STUDENTS, PARENTS AND GUARDIANS IS AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT PART OF BEING AN EFFECTIVE TRUSTEE, AND REALLY, TRULY HELPS INFORM MANY OF MY DECISIONS. AND I AM ONCE AGAIN GRATEFUL TO BE PART OF A DISTRICT THAT PRIORITIZES THESE DISCUSSIONS. IT'S BEEN ESPECIALLY INTERESTING HEARING THE CONVERSATIONS AROUND CELL PHONES AND CELL PHONE [02:25:03] USAGE, AND THE VARYING PERSPECTIVES THAT EACH OF THESE DIFFERENT GROUPS COME TO HAVE, AS WELL AS THE COMMONALITY ACROSS THEM. COUPLE WEEKS AGO, I WAS FORTUNATE TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR CTE ADVISORY DAY, THAT IS OUR CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION ADVISORY DAY. IT WAS HELD AT CAL LUTHERAN. I WALKED INTO A VERY, VERY FULL ROOM. I MEAN, EVERY YEAR, THIS EVENT JUST GETS BIGGER AND BETTER. IT BRINGS TOGETHER OUR STUDENTS, EDUCATORS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS, AND BUSINESS PARTNERS, ALL FOCUSED ON IMPROVING AND STRENGTHENING OUR CAREER TECH EDUCATION COURSES AND PATHWAYS. THE MESSAGE I HEARD WAS THE IMPORTANCE WE ALL HAVE OF PREPARING OUR STUDENTS FOR A CAREER, WHETHER IT'S POST-HIGH SCHOOL OR POST-COLLEGE. AS WAS THE NEED FOR DEVELOPING A PRODUCTIVE WORKFORCE HERE IN VENTURA COUNTY AND KEEPING ALL OF OUR WONDERFUL STUDENTS ENGAGED HERE. SO, I DO WANT TO THANK OUR THREE CTE COORDINATORS WHO PUT THIS EVENT TOGETHER. ASHLEY COOPER, DR. LAURIE LOOKER AND NICK FROM NEWBURY PARK HIGH SCHOOL, AS WELL AS ALL OF THE BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS WHO CAME AND PRIORITIZED THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS. AND JUST SO YOU KNOW, ANA ALVAREZ, IN ADDITION TO EVERYTHING SHE SAID UP THERE, IS ALSO ON THEIR ADVISORY BOARD. THE ASSISTANCE LEAGUE REALLY DOES A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF WORK FOR OUR SCHOOLS. THEY SEND VOLUNTEERS INTO SOME OF OUR TITLE I CLASSROOMS, AS WELL AS THEY PROVIDE NEW CLOTHING AND SHOES FOR SOME OF OUR STUDENTS THROUGH THEIR OPERATION SCHOOL BELL INITIATIVE, AND I'M BRINGING THIS UP BECAUSE I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THE RIBBON- CUTTING OF THEIR BRAND- NEW THRIFT STORE SITE. THE SHOP IS 100% RUN BY VOLUNTEERS, AND ALL THE MONEY THEY EARN GOES RIGHT BACK TO THE COMMUNITY AND TO OUR SCHOOLS. IT'S A SPACIOUS SITE. IT'S WELL STOCKED.
