STUDENTS FAMILIES CAME TO CAMPUS AND CONNECTED WITH TEACHERS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT CLASSES AT OUR SCHOOL. THANKS OF THE SUPPORT FROM A LATTE, BREAKTHROUGH AND TEEN CENTER WE WERE ABLE TO HELP FAMILIES GET HELPFUL RESOURCES. FOR THIS EVENT LEADERSHIP HAD ENGLISH AND SPANISH SPEAKERS CALL HOME TO PERSONALLY INVITE FAMILY MEMBERS TO THE EVENT. OUR LEADERSHIP STUDENTS ALSO MADE BANNERS FOR EACH TEACHERS TABLE AND MADE POSTERS TO PUT IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL. WE ALSO MADE DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS AND HAD QR CODES SO PARENTS COULD SCAN AND BE LINKED TO THE TEACHERS EMAIL RIGHT ONSIDE. WE ALSO WANT TO THANK DR. POWELL, MR. GORBACH, MS. HARRISON, MS. AFTER THAT WE RETURNED INSIDE TO WATCH A 20 MINUTE VIDEO ABOUT KENNY WASHINGTON , THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN FOOTBALL PLAYER FOR THE RAMS WHO INFLUENCED THE REPRESENTATION OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS IN THE NFL IN A POSITIVE WAY. AS WE ALL KNOW HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH IS AN IMPORTANT MONTH TO RECOGNIZE THE COUNTLESS CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR SOCIETY. THEREFORE WE HAVE A BULLETIN BOARD DEDICATED TO THIS MONTH AND WE HAVE DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS ABOUT IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN HISTORY AND THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS. TO CELEBRATE LAST FRIDAY WE HAD A GAME HOSTED DURING LUNCH BREAK HALF OF THE STUDENTS AT OUR SCHOOL JOINT TEMPLATE FOR AN OPPORTUNITY TO WIN SOME PRIZES. STUDENT BOARD TRUSTEE AID IN LIGHT MR. WE LOVE DOING THIS BECAUSE IT FEELS GOOD KNOWING WE CAN BREAK PATTERNS AND BARRIERS AND WE CAN HELP PARENTS BETTER UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ACTIVE MEMBERS IN THE STUDENTS SCHOOL. TOURNAMENTS. AS YOU KNOW TOURNAMENTS CAN BE FUN AT CVHS. ON FRIDAY MEMBERS OF THE ARMY WHO VISITED OUR SCHOOL CHALLENGED STUDENTS TO DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT. IT SHOULD BE A GOOD COMPETITION. FOR PICKLE BALL WE WERE ABLE TO GET A REPORT PAINTED THANKS TO THE MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT AND WILL START ORGANIZING SOON. MR. GORBACH AND ANYONE ELSE IS INVITED TO BE PART OF THIS ONE. THE COUNSELING TEAM IS MEETING WITH EACH SENIOR TO DISCUSS THE PLANS FOR POST GRADUATION AND DEVELOP A PLAN TO COMPLETE APPLICATIONS. MANY OF OUR SENIORS ARE JOINING THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA APPLICATION WORKSHOP ON OCTOBER 8TH AND THE COMMON APPLICATION WORKSHOP ON OCTOBER 30TH. STUDENTS WHO PLAN TO START COLLEGE WILL HAVE A REPRESENTATIVE ON CAMPUS TO ASSIST WITH APPLICATIONS DURING SECOND SEMESTER. OUR SCHOOL SITE COUNCILS FOCUS ON TWO MAJOR PROJECTS. STARTING THIS YEAR WE HAVE A FOCUSED TEAM WORKING ON ATTENDANCE AND ADDRESSING CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM. THE TEAM IS WORKING TO ENGAGE THE WHOLE STUDENT BODY IN CRAFTING AN INCENTIVE PROGRAM. A SURVEY WENT OUT TO ALL STUDENTS INQUIRING WHAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO SEE AS INCENTIVES AND SURPRISINGLY THE STUDENT BODY VOTED FOR COOL SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND MOVIE NIGHTS IN OUR AMPHITHEATER AS THEIR NUMBER ONE CHOICE. THE DATA ANALYSIS AND PROGRESS TOWARDS GOALS IS SHARED WITH SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL FOR FEEDBACK AS WE WORK ON BOTH POSITIVE ATTENDANCE CAMPAIGN AND INTERVENTIONS FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE MISSING MORE THAN 10% OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. SECONDLY THE SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL IS REVIEWING OUR SCHOOL SAFETY PLANS THIS WEEK TO GET READY FOR THE GREAT CALIFORNIA SHAKEOUT ON THE 17TH. CENTURY AND SHINE TEAMS ARE WORKING TO BUILD TRUNK OR TREAT SCHEDULE FOR THE 31ST OF OCTOBER IF ANYBODY WANTS TO COME. OUR LAST LARGE EVENT WAS A EGG HUNT LAST SPRING WHERE WE NEARLY HAD 400 GUESTS IN ATTENDANCE. OUR GOAL IS TO SURPASS THE GUEST COUNT AND INTRODUCE COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO OUR CAMPUS AND THE DIFFERENT LEARNING PATH WE HAVE IN THE ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMS. BOTH SHINE AND CENTURY PARENTS ARE COMING TOGETHER FOR A SERIES OF WORKSHOPS SUPPORTING PARENTS WITH STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH , ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND COLLEGE PLANNING. WORKSHOP STARTED WITH EVENING AND WEEKEND TRAINING SESSIONS ON OUR NEW LEARNING PLATFORM AND WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. WE KICKED OFF THE FESTIVITIES WITH AN EXCITING HOMECOMING PARADE FOLLOWED BY A SPIRIT WEEK AND SPIRIT RALLY IN THEMED SPIRIT WEEK WE HAD STUDENTS DRESS UP IN CREATIVE OUTFITS AND SHOWCASE THEIR SCHOOL SPIRIT. IN SEPTEMBER WE HOSTED OUR ANNUAL SENIOR SUNRISE EVENT WHERE OVER 150 SENIORS GATHER ON CAMPUS IN THE EARLY MORNING TO WATCH THE SUNRISE TOGETHER SYMBOLIZING THE START OF HER FINAL YEAR AT HIGH SCHOOL. WITH THE SUPPORT OF 10 TEACHERS AND DEDICATED PT AS A VOLUNTEER STUDENTS ENJOYED BREAKFAST AND BONDED WITH THEIRS CLASSMATES IN A MEMORABLE MOMENT. WHEN PARENTS ARE FORCED TO EXPERIENCE THIS IT WILL BOOST CONFIDENCE IN THEMSELVES AND IN THEIR CHILDREN. PARENTS ARE AFRAID TO LET THEIR CHILDREN OUT OF THEIR SIGHT OR REACH AND I AM AWARE THIS IS AN UNPOPULAR POSITION THAT I PRESENT HERE. THIS TEACHES CHILDREN TO FEAR BEING INDEPENDENT. WE ACTUALLY HAD A UDL KICKOFF WHERE WE HAD A WELL-KNOWN UDL GURU COME AND SPEAK TO ALL OF OUR TEACHERS IN CVUSD AND THAT HAPPENED IN THE 19 20 SCHOOL YEAR. WE ALSO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED IN THE 19 20 SCHOOL YEAR. EVEN THOUGH THINGS HAPPENED IN THE 19 20 SCHOOL YEAR HAVE PERSISTED IN OUR GOAL AND AIM TO MAKE SURE ALL OF OUR TEACHERS ARE FULLY PREPARED TO DESIGN LEARNING EXPERIENCES FOR OUR STUDENTS. YOU CAN IMAGINE THE 2021 SCHOOL YEAR THAT WAS EVEN MORE CHALLENGING AND WE WERE ABLE TO STAY THE COURSE. DURING THAT 20 21 SCHOOL YEAR WE REALIZE VERY IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF UDL WAS SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING. MAKING THOSE CONNECTIONS LET ALONE REDUCING THE BARRIERS THAT THEY MIGHT BE EXPENSING BY LEARNING AT HOME, NOT BEING AT SCHOOL ALL DAY AND NOT HAVING CONNECTIONS WITH CLASSMATES OR TEACHERS. AT THAT TIME UDL AND ITS CONNECTION TO SCL WAS ONE OF OUR HIGHEST PRIORITIES. AS WE RETURNED EVERYBODY BACK TO SCHOOL IN THE 21 22 SCHOOL YEAR NOT ONLY WERE WE THINKING ABOUT UDL AND SCL WE WERE RETURNING TO INCLUSION. WE NO LONGER HAD FICKLE RULES OF HOW MANY KIDS COULD BE IN THE SPACE AND HOW MANY KIDS THEY COULD BE IN CONTACT WITH. WE COULD RETURN TO WHAT EDUCATION TRULY IS WHICH IS ARE STUDENTS BEING EDUCATED TOGETHER . STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM, STUDENTS BELONGING. WE CONTINUE THAT CONNECTION WITH UDL AND SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING TO THE NEXT TWO YEARS THROUGH SEVERAL DIFFERENT PROFESSIONAL OFFERINGS FOR OUR TEACHERS. JUST BEING REALLY GOAL DRIVEN TOWARDS EDUCATING OUR TEACHERS ON SPECIFIC CHECK POINTS WHICH ARE NOW CALLED CONSIDERATIONS. FOCUSING MAINLY ON THE ENGAGEMENT PRINCIPLE . I WOULD ALSO SAY ONE OF THE THINGS WE EMPHASIZE THROUGH TRAINING IS BY INCORPORATING A STRATEGY SPECIFICALLY TO BENEFIT ONE STUDENT, WHEN WE INCORPORATE THAT STRATEGY UNIVERSALLY FOR ANY STUDENT WHO WANTS TO UTILIZE IT WE SEE HOW MANY MORE STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM THAT OPPORTUNITY. A COUPLE WEEKS AGO I WAS AT AN EVENT WHERE A CVUSD SENIOR SPOKE AND IT WAS A ROOM FULL OF ADULTS IN THE BEST WAY I CAN DESCRIBE THIS YOUNG WOMAN WAS THAT SHE SPARKLED. SHE WAS BUBBLY, SHE WAS CONFIDENT, SHE CLEARLY FELT VERY COMFORTABLE SHARING ABOUT HERSELF IN FRONT OF THIS ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE. I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED. AFTERWARDS I HAD THE CHANCE TO TALK TO A COUPLE OF THE ADULTS IN THE ROOM WRITTEN ON THIS YOUNG WOMAN FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND THEY SHARED WHEN SHE STARTED HIGH SCHOOL SHE WAS PAINFULLY SHY, LACKED SELF-CONFIDENCE BUT BECAUSE OF THE OPPORTUNITIES AT HER HIGH SCHOOL SHE HAD OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN, GROW, ENGAGE AND ULTIMATELY BECOME A LEADER AT HER HIGH SCHOOL. SO THERE ARE SO MANY EXAMPLES LIKE THAT. EVEN THOUGH THE WORK CONTINUES I AM IN AWE OF THE OPPORTUNITIES WE PROVIDE FOR OUR STUDENTS AND VERY GRATEFUL FOR THOSE DOING THE WORK WITH STUDENTS INCLUDING S DAC LEADERS WHO ARE ENGAGING AND ENCOURAGING THEIR FELLOW STUDENTS. IT'S SUCH A PLEASURE TO SEE THE ACACIA AND WETHERSFIELD SCHOOL NEIGHBORHOOD CELEBRATE THEIR SCHOOL AS THE CENTER THAT BRINGS THE NEIGHBORHOODS TOGETHER. SO I WILL PROBABLY WEAR MY I WALK TO SCHOOL WITH IGGY, THE EAGLE OF WETHERSFIELD AND THE SYMBOLS THAT I GOT AT ACACIA. THEY'RE PERFORMING ARTS, ALL KINDS OF SPORTS, THERE IS SO MUCH. I THINK TRUSTEE POWELL WAS TALKING ABOUT ENGAGEMENT AND IS THROUGH THOSE ACTIVITIES AND CO-CURRICULAR'S THAT OUR STUDENTS GET ENGAGED IN SCHOOLS. THEY FEEL CONNECTED AND BUILD THEIR COMMUNITIES. IT'S REALLY WHAT MAKES THEM WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL IN THE MORNING. I JUST WANT TO EMPHASIZE THAT. AS TRUSTEE GIL SAID WE HAVE SPENT LOTS OF TIME AND LOTS OF DAC MEETINGS AND I DO WANT TO THINK THE PARENTS, THE GUARDIANS AND THE ADMINISTRATORS WHO ALL MAKE THAT WORK BECAUSE I THINK THEY ARE INCREDIBLY IMPACTFUL AND I THINK IT IS CRITICAL TO HEAR FROM MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY. THIS IS WHERE STUDENTS GO OUT AND HELP OTHERS AND GET INVOLVED IN OUR COMMUNITY, AND THEY DO SOMETHING WITH WHICH IS STEAM WITH AN OUTDOORS COMPONENT WHERE THEY ARE REPLANTING NATIVE PLANTS AND THEY GOT A GRANT FOR OAK TREES. IN THOUSAND OAKS, SO THEY'RE PLANTING 50 OF THEM, I THINK HE SAID THERE WERE 20 ALREADY PLANTED. JUST TO GIVE STUDENTS OPPORTUNITIES THAT THEY WOULDN'T OTHERWISE HAVE.
