EARLY BACK PROGRAM. WE THE PEOPLE. TEACHER OF THE MONTH AWARDS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND MORE.

THANKS TO THE SUCCESS OF OUR FIRST EVER PLAY IT FORWARD INSTRUMENT DRIVE LAST SPRING. HELPING TO REMOVE A BARRIER FOR MANY ENROLLED IN THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM CONDUCTED BY #KR #R 3. WE LOOK FORWARD TO PRODUCE THE DISTRICT THIS SPRING. WHERE THESE STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM ON THE BIGGEST STAGE IN TOWN.

I'M HERE TO ASK THE DISTRICT TO BAN SMART PHONES, YOUTUBE AND VIDEO GAMES FROM SCHOOL CAMPUSES. I'M SURE YOU'VE HEARD THIS ALL BEFORE. BUT I JUST WANT TO REITERATE HOW THE PARENTS ARE FEELING. OUR ELEMENTARY KIDS ARE WATCHING YOUTUBE SHORTS, SENDING E-MAILS AND PLAYING GAMES DURING CLASS. COVID SEEMED TO BE A CATALYST FOR USING COMPUTERS REGULARLY FOR CLASSWORK, HOMEWORK AND TESTS, AND IT WAS NEEDED DURING THAT TIME, IT WAS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. BUT NOW IT'S TIME TO PAUSE AND REEVALUATE THE IMPACT CONSTANT SCREEN USE IS HAVING ON OUR CHILDREN AND THEIR MENTAL HEALTH. I WAS AT A SCHOOL SITE MEETING WHERE WE WERE DISCUSSING SOME OF THESE ISSUES. THE TEACHERS PRESENT DESCRIBED THE MONITORING SOFTWARE THEY USED TO MAKE SURE STUDENTS AREN'T GOOFING OFF ON COMPUTERS DURING CLASSTIME. IN THEORY, THIS SOFTWARE SOUNDS GREAT. BUT IN REALITY, IT'S JUST NOT FOOLPROOF. MY FIFTH GRADER WAS IN THE ROOM DURING THIS DISCUSSION. AND AFTERWARDS, I ASKED HIM WHAT HE THOUGHT ABOUT IT. AND HE SCOFFED AND SAID, IT ONLY WORKS WHEN THE TEACHER IS ACTIVELY LOOKING AT THE DASHBOARD. WHICH IS HARD TO DO WHEN TEACHING A CLASS. WHAT A BURDEN ON OUR TEACHERS TO HAVE ONE MORE THING TO DO. HE SAID THAT KIDS RUSH THROUGH ONLINE TESTS OR ASSIGNMENTS AND THEN WATCH YOUTUBE SHORTS BEFORE THE TEACHER NOTICES. AND REMEMBER, THIS IS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STILL. IT'S NOT EVEN HIGH SCHOOL. WHY CAN'T WE JUST ELIMINATE THIS DISTRACTION BY GETTING RID OF YOUTUBE AND BLOCKING GAMING SITES? THIS

NEEDS TO BE DONE AT A DISTRICT LEVEL NOT INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL. I AM ASKING THE SCHOOL DISTRICT MAKE THREE SIMPLE CHANGES.

NUMBER 1, BAN SMART PHONES FOR ALL AGE LEVELS. NUMBER 2, REMOVE YOUTUBE FROM KIDS' COMPUTERS. TEACHERS CAN STILL USE IT TO SHOW THE CLASS EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS. AND NUMBER 3, NO VIDEO GAME SITES ACCESSIBLE ON CAMPUS. THERE ARE PLENTY THEY CAN USE IF THEY HAVE FREE TIME. THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER CHANGES TO TECHNOLOGY THAT I WOULD LIKE TO ASK FOR, TOO. BUT I'M TRYING TO FOCUS ON THE ONES THAT WILL MAKE THE BIGGEST IMPACT AND ARE THE EASIEST TO IMPLEMENT. PLEASE PROVIDE A SETTING THAT IS CONDUCIVE TO LEARNING AND CREATING STRONG, INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS. AND BEFORE WE DO GO. MY FIFTH GRADER WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A TEST ON PAPER BECAUSE IT'S EASIER TO CHECK HIS WORK AND FIND MISTAKES. THAT IS, IN MANY PARTS, LIKE THEIR ASPIRATIONAL GOAL. AND IN PARTICULAR, TO SERVE STUDENTS WHO HISTORICALLY MAY HAVE NOT BEEN PROVIDED THOSE OPPORTUNITIES. IN ADDITION, THE STATE LEGISLATURE AND THROUGH CALIFORNIA LAW, HAS EXPANDED DUAL ENROLLMENT, THROUGH THE COLLEGE ASK CAREER ACCESS PATHWAYS PARTNERSHIPS OR WHAT WE WILL CALL, FROM NOW ON, CCAP, WHICH IS ANOTHER ACRONYM. CCAP ALLOWS LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICTS TO COME IN PARTNER WITH EACH OTHER, TO REALLY STREAMLINE, DUAL ENROLLMENT OPPORTUNITIES. AGAIN, FOR STUDENTS WHO MAY BE UNDERREPRESENTED IN HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION. OR I'M SORRY, HIGHER EDUCATION. BUT THERE ARE DEPARTMENTS, WHERE CERTAIN DEPARTMENTS ARE LOSING SECTIONS. SOME ARE TAKING DUAL ENROLLMENT FOR, SAY, SOCIAL STUDIES. AND TEACHERS ARE HAVING TO TEACH DIFFERENT COURSES. ELECTIVE COURSES, THINGS LIKE THAT. WE HAVE TWO MORE.

FOR NOW, STUDENTS ARE NOT MAKING THE A.P. CLASSES WITH US. THEY PERCEIVED THEM TO BE LESS RIGOROUS. AND THIS IS AFFECTING OUR TEACHER MORALE. BECAUSE STUDENTS ARE CHOOSING NOT TO BE WITH THEM. BECAUSE THE CLASS IS

NOT AS DIFFICULT. >>> AND THEN FINALLY, WE'VE MADE MANY ATTEMPTS. I KNOW OVER THE COURSE OF THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, TO HAVE OUR QUALIFIED CVUSD TEACHERS BECOME DUAL INSTRUCTORS. OUR TEACHERS WANT TO TEACH. THESE DUAL ENROLLMENT CLASSES. AND THEY ARE QUALIFIED TO DO SO. THEY HAVE MASTERS DEGREES, THEY'RE EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTORS. AND WE WANT THEM TO BE HIRED BY MOORPARK COLLEGE. AND SO FAR, WE'VE BEEN

THE CHALLENGE, THOUGH, FOR MISS NELSON IS THAT SHE DOESN'T HAVE, LIKE THE BACK-END ACCESS TO SEE WHERE A STUDENT IS AT IN THE PROCESS. EVERY YEAR, THERE IS A MARKED IMPROVEMENT. AND TO ME, AT LEAST, IT WAS VERY OBVIOUS, THIS YEAR IN PARTICULAR. WHEN WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THE NEW LCAP IN THE SPRING. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SPSAS REALLY ROSE TO THE TOP. THEY CLEARLY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AN IMPORTANT DOCUMENT.

YOU ABOUT GIVEN THE CONFIGURATION. THIS IS WHERE THE INTERVENTIONS TAKE PLACE. WHERE THE STRATEGIES TAKE PLACE. AND I HAVE TO SAY IN THE SPSA PLANS THAT I READ. AND I READ SOME IN DEPTH. AND I SKIMMED SOME OF THEM. BUT AGAIN, MUCH MORE DETAILED, MUCH MORE FOCUSED THAN THEY HAVE BEEN IN THE PAST YEARS. AND I DO THINK IT'S BECAUSE OF THE WAY THE LCAP IS NOW NEWLY FOCUSED. I THOUGHT, WHEN I LOOKED AT METRICS. AND I ALWAYS LOOK AT METRICS, BECAUSE I DO LOVE STATISTICS AND NUMBERS. AND PUTTING THE RIGHT METRICS IS IMPORTANT. AND I REALLY FELT THAT OUR SCHOOLS WERE VERY CREATIVE IN THINKING BEYOND.

WE'RE JUST GOING TO LOOK AT STATE TESTING RESULTS, WHICH I HAVE SCENE IN THE PAST TO, WE'RE GOING TO LOOK AT SURVEYS. WE'RE GOING TO LOOK AT GRADES. WE'RE GOING TO LOOK AT D.F. LISTS. AND ATTENDANCE. AND I THINK THAT MAKES A MORE MEANINGFUL PLAN. THE OTHER -- SEVERAL OF THE SCHOOLS I READ ALSO PUT A LOT OF EMPHASIS ON PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND P.L.C. TIME, PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES. AND THAT'S REALLY THE LACE WHERE OUR EDUCATORS CAN FOCUS ON LOOKING AT THE DATA AND COLLABORATING AND LOOKING AT TRENDS. AND THAT TO ME, WAS A REALLY IMPORTANT TIME. I WAS HAPPY TO SEE THAT THERE'S A LOT OF EMPHASIS ON IS THAT. SO ALL IN ALL, I CONCUR, MR. LOO. THESE WERE ALL COMPREHENSIVE AND A STEP UP FROM THE PAST. THAT IS ALWAYS A HIGHLIGHT OF OUR MEETING WHEN WE GET OUR YOUNGEST STUDENTS TO COME HERE AND SPEAK TO US. ALSO BIG THANK YOU TO LANA CLARK AND THE CONEJO SCHOOLS FUNCTION. I HAVE TREMENDOUS RESPECT AND APPRECIATION FOR ALL OF THE SUPPORT CSF HAS PROVIDED OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, OVER I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY YEARS. MANY.

AND I'VE GOT MY TICKET. AND MY DISCO SHOES FOR THE UPCOMING SOIREE, WHICH IS ALSO OCTOBER 5TH. SO I HOPE TO SEE MANY OF YOU THERE. I ALSO WANT TO THANK THE AAUW.

THREE LARGE BOXES OF CLOTHING AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES TO THE CONEJO CLOSET. ASK THAT IS JUST SO APPRECIATED. I'M GRATEFUL FOR THE COMMUNITY PARTNERS. I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT AT WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL.

PRESIDENT GRAHAM GAVE EVERYONE, ME INCLUDED, A SNEAK PEEK AT HIS SCHOOL'S SPSA GOALS. THAT WAS THE FIRST SPSA GOAL I GOT TO READ, SINCE HE LAID OUT WHAT HE WAS GOING TO DO.

AS USUAL, OUR FANTASTIC BAND PROVIDED ENTERTAINMENT. MY JOB AFTER THAT, WAS HELPING PEOPLE NAVIGATE TO THE CAMPUS AND GETTING READY TO CHAT WITH KELMAN, WHICH IS ALWAYS QUITE A JOY. I DID GET TO ATTEND TWO OF THE THREE D.A.C. MEETINGS LAST WEEK. D.A. C. AND THE LGBTQ+ ACT. UNFORTUNATELY, I HAD A CONFLICT WITH THE D.A.C. MEETING.

IT'S GREAT TO SEE SUCH GREAT ATTENDANCE AND ENGAGEMENT FROM THE GET-GO. WE ARE CLEARLY OFF TO A GREAT START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR IN TERMS OF PARENT AND GUARDIAN ENGAGEMENT. AND I AM SO APPRECIATIVE OF THE TIME SPENT BY THESE VOLUNTEERS AND THE IMPORTANCE TO ME, AS A TRUSTEE, LISTENING TO THESE CONVERSATIONS AND GETTING THAT FEEDBACK IS INCREDIBLY HELPFUL AND IMPORTANT.

AND WE REALLY ARE LUCKY TO HAVE SUCH A CULTURE OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT. AND THAT'S PRETTY MUCH IT.

AND I KNOW THERE WILL BE SOME ACTIVITIES HAPPENING AT OUR HIGH SCHOOLS SOON. AND I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR ALL ABOUT THEM.

AND HAS BEEN MENTIONED, DISTRICT ADVISORY HAS BEEN MENTIONED LAST WEEK, DAK, LGBTQ+ GATE AND DISCUSSIONS ON

A MYRIAD OF ISSUES THERE ARE THINGS WE KNOW FROM GETTING INFORMATION FROM THE DAKS, OUT TO THE COMMITTEES. SO I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING AND HEARING ABOUT HOW ALL OF THAT ROLLS OUT AS WE MOVE MOVE FORWARD INTO THE SCHOOL YEAR. I GOT TO HIT CONEJO VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL AND CENTURY ACADEMY LAST NIGHT. AT CVHS, I REALLY APPRECIATED SEEING THE COMMUNITY PARTNERS WHO WERE THERE AT THE SCHOOL. AND JUST THE SORT OF SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND THE FESTIVE FEEL. CENTURY WAS ALSO A GIFT FOR ME. I LEARNED A LOT BY BEING THERE LAST NIGHT. I WAS ABLE TO SIT IN ON ONE OF THE PARENT WORKSHOPS THAT THEY HELD TO EDUCATE FAMILIES ON THE NEW CURRICULAR PLAT STORM. CENTURIES L.L.P. AND THEY ARE WORKING TO GET THAT ROLLING. THE P.P.L. 3R-78 OFFERS GREAT OPTIONS FOR CENTURY STUDENTS. MUCH MORE SO THAN THE APEX PLATFORM DID. SO I'M EXCITED TO SEE HOW THEY ROLL THAT OUT.

AND A COUPLE OF SPECIAL SCHOOL SPECIFIC EVENTS. I'LL SHOUT OUT. IT WAS MY FIRST TIME AT WEATHERSFIELD'S PATRIOTIC ASSEMBLY. I HEARD ABOUT IT A LOT OF TIMES WHEN I GOT THERE.

AND IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT AT ALL. THANK YOU SO MUCH TO OUR FIRST RESPONDERS. MANY, OF COURSE, WERE PRESENT AT THE ASSEMBLY. AND WERE HONORED BEAUTIFULLY BY THE STUDENTS AT SUMMERFIELD. AND FINALLY, I GOT TO SEE ACACIA, WHEN SUBARU CAME AND HAD THEIR PRESENTATIONS. 1500 CLASSROOMS GETTING $500 EACH AND OTHER SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND THINGS LIKE THAT. SO IT'S ALWAYS LOVELY TO SEE BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS OUT THERE, SUPPORTING OUR SCHOOLS. SO THANK YOU. AND THAT'S IT FOR ME.

I WENT TO, ACACIA. AND TWO OF THE THREE DAC MEETINGS THAT WERE HELD LAST WEEK. WE PASSED RESOLUTIONS LIKE HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH. AND LGBTQ+ MONTH. TO MAKE SURE OUR KIDS HAVE A FEELING OF BELONGING AND INCLUSION.

AND I MEAN, AT THE BIG HIGH SCHOOLS, KIDS FIND THEIR COMMUNITY WITHIN THE SCHOOL, WHETHER IT BE JOURNALISM, WHETHER IT BE MOCK TRIAL, WHETHER IT BE -- THEY FIND A COMMUNITY WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. LAST NIGHT, I WAS HERE AT CONEJO VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL. AND IT'S A COMMUNITY OF THE WHOLE SCHOOL. IT WAS LIKE A BLOCK PARTY. THERE WAS A GRILL OUT.

THERE ARE OLD -- I SHOULDN'T SAY OLD. DON'T QUOTE ME ON THAT. RETIRED PEOPLE, WHO -- PART OF THE FAMILY, PART OF THE FAMILY WHO WERE THERE, AND CAME BACK. THE COMMUNITY THE KIDS FIND HERE IS SPECIAL. BECAUSE IT INVOLVES THE WHOLE SCHOOL. AND I WAS JUST SO IMPRESSED THAT THEY WERE -- THAT THE SCHOOL CELEBRATES THAT WHOLE COMMUNITY. SO I JUST WANTED TO THANK EVERYBODY INVOLVED WITH THIS THE KIDS. I KNOW THERE ARE KIDS THAT I TALK TO THEIR PARENTS. AND THEY SAID, WELL , HE -- IN THIS CASE, HE WAS CONSIDERING GOING BACK TO HIS OLD SCHOOL BUT NOW NOT SO MUCH BECAUSE HE'S FOUND COMMUNITY IN THIS SCHOOL. I WANT TO EXPRESS. IF YOU GREW UP, FOR PEOPLE LISTENING AND VIEWING, IF YOU GREW UP WITH AN IDEA OF CONTINUATION HIGH SCHOOL, THIS ISN'T IT. THIS IS DEFINITELY A COMMUNITY THAT BUILDS AND HELPS STUDENTS ACHIEVE.

AND I JUST WANTED TO IMPRESS ON THAT I WAS IMPRESSED.

IT'S BEEN A VERY, VERY LONG TIME. BUT IT WAS GREAT TO BE ABLE TO HAVE YOU. EVEN IF THAT'S THE ONLY TIME YOU CAN MAKE IT. THE FACT THAT YOU TOOK THE TIME AND WERE ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE, I THINK IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR THE PARENTS TO HEAR AND SEE THEIR WHY. IT'S NOT JUST THEIR STUDENTS OR THE ONES ON CAMPUS. THANK YOU FOR THAT. I WENT TO A NUMBER OF BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHTS. AND I TOOK A DIFFERENT TACT THIS YEAR. THIS TIME, I WENT AND STAYED IN ONE CLASS THE ENTIRE TIME, JUST TO SEE THE PRESENTATION FROM BEGINNING TO END. IT'S DIFFERENT THAN POPPING IN AND SAYING HI AND GOING AND DISRUPTING. I WANT TO THANK ALL THE TEACHERS WHO WERE VERY GRACIOUS AND HAD ME IN THERE.
