PARENTS ARE COMBINING WORKSHOPS FOR PARENTS REGARDING STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH, ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, AND COLLEGE PLANNING. WORKSHOPS ON EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS FOR TRAINING THE NEW SCHOOL PLP PLATFORM WILL HAPPEN THROUGHOUT THE YEAR WHICH WILL ALIGN WITH THE GOAL FOR ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION TO CREATE MEANINGFUL OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS TO ENGAGE AND BUILD THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY. SPECIFICALLY WE WANT TO HAVE 80% OF FAMILIES AND GAUGE IN TWO OR MORE SCHOOL SPONSORED ACTIVITIES OR EVENTS THIS YEAR. STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES HAVE SCHEDULED MEETINGS WITH ADMINISTRATION AND WE HAVE BEGUN DISCUSSING PRIORITIES FOR EACH QUARTER, GOALS FOR THE YEAR AND THE NEWLY ADOPTED FIVE-STAR STUDENT SYSTEM FOR ATTENDANCE, SURVEYS, AND ATTENDANCE CAMPAIGN. THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES ALSO ATTENDED THE SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL MEETING TODAY WHERE WE FOCUS ON CONDUCTING A REVIEW OF THE PLAN THAT WE STARTED PLANNING AT THE END OF LAST YEAR. I AM A SENIOR AT CONEJO VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL AND I'M GOING TO BE THE SCHOOL 'S BOARD REPRESENTATIVE FOR THIS YEAR. WE HAVE A GREAT START TO OUR SCHOOL YEAR. LEADERSHIP WELCOMED MANY NEW STUDENTS BY HELPING THEM FIND CLASSES AND GOING CLASS TO CLASS PRESENTING A WELCOMING SPEECH TO BE MORE UNITED. THIS IS IMPORTANT TO US BECAUSE WE KNOW THAT IT'S NOT EASY TRANSFERRING FROM YOUR HOMESCHOOL TO ANOTHER SO IT'S OUR PRIORITY TO MAKE OUR NEW DRAGONS FEEL AT HOME. ALTHOUGH SOME STUDENTS PLAN TO GO BACK TO THEIR HOME SCHOOL FOR THE SEMESTER WE TRY OUR BEST TO MAKE THEM FEEL WELCOMED AND THE OTHER STUDENTS THAT PLAN TO GRADUATE WITH US. WE TRY TO MAKE THE BEST MEMORIES WITH THEM FOR THE BEST TIME IN HIGH SCHOOL. WITH THE HELP OF STAFF AND LEADERSHIP STUDENTS WE'VE CREATED AN ENVIRONMENT FOR STUDENTS TO FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE, CONFIDENT, AND AT HOME. LOTS OF STUDENTS SAID THAT IT'S NOT BACK-TO-SCHOOL, IT'S BEING BACK HOME. EVEN THOUGH SEPTEMBER IS OFFICIALLY ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH, IT HAS BEEN A FOCUS EVEN BEFORE SCHOOL STARTED. MANY STUDENTS COME TO SCHOOL WITH PRIOR ATTENDANCE ISSUES BEFORE THE SCHOOL YEAR STARTED OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL IS IN MANY HOMES DROPPING OFF FLYERS AND ENCOURAGING STUDENTS TO COME TO SCHOOL. IT IS PAID OFF BECAUSE WE ONLY HAD ONE STUDENT ABSENT ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL AND 90% AND THE FIRST WEEK.
THROUGHOUT THE YEAR WE WILL CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON ATTENDANCE AND EACH WEEK WE HAVE PLANNED MANY ACTIVITIES TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO ATTEND. WE CELEBRATED A GREAT START TO THE SCHOOL YEAR WITH A SCHOOLWIDE WATER BALLOON TOSS. 90% OF THE SCHOOL PARTICIPATED INCLUDING STAFF AND WE EXTENDED LUNCH. AS A RESULT OF THIS WE BUILT SCHOOL SPIRIT, A SUPPORTIVE AND WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT. IT WAS SUCH A GREAT WAY TO START THE SCHOOL YEAR. AS WE INTRODUCE NEW CHANGES THAT THE ASG CLASS HOPES STUDENTS LOVE LIKE THE LOCATION OF THE DANCE FLOOR ON CAMPUS. STARTING SEPTEMBER 15 ASSISTANT HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH AND WE ARE WORKING TO SPOTLIGHT LATINO HERITAGE INCLUDING HANDING OUT CLASSIC DISHES AND DRINKS AT LUNCH. WE ARE COLLABORATING WITH THE LATINO CONNECTIONS CLUB TO FURTHER CELEBRATE . ON SEPTEMBER 18 WE HAVE CLUB RUSH DAY IN WHICH MANY CLUBS AND INTEREST GROUPS WILL HAVE BOOTHS SET UP TO SHOW OFF THEIR CLUB AND HOPEFULLY GET MORE OF THE STUDENT BODY TO JOIN IN. ON SEPTEMBER 20 AND 21ST HOUR THEATER DEPARTMENT HAS THE ANNUAL EVENT CALLED THE 24 HOUR THEATER FESTIVAL IN WHICH OUR VERY OWN PANTHERS DIRECT, RIGHT AND CAST THEIR OWN -- AND PERFORM THEM FOR ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO WATCH. ON SEPTEMBER 27 FROM 7:00 - 10:00 IN THE STADIUM OUR DANCE TEAM IS HOSTING THEIR ANNUAL COMPETITION CALLED BEST DANCE CREW IN WHICH STUDENTS FROM SPORTS TEAMS, CLUBS AND MORE FOR ME DANCE TEAM ALONG WITH DANCING MEMBERS EMBATTLED TO BE THE BEST DANCE GROUP. ASP IS ACTIVELY PLANNING HOMECOMING WEEK AND SPORTS TEAMS ARE FULLY IMMERSED IN THEIR SEASONS. ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 23 WE HOSTED OUR FIRST HOME FOOTBALL GAME WHERE SPIRITED STUDENT SECTION TURNED OUT IN FULL FORCE TO CHEER ON THE LANCERS CREATING A VIBRANT SEA OF GREEN. WE ARE ALSO EXCITED TO WELCOME OUR PARENTS BACK TO BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 WHERE PARENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENJOY PERFORMANCES FROM JAZZ BAND, CHOIR AND ORCHESTRA DURING THE OPENING CEREMONY. OUR DIRECTOR RIGHT THERE RUNS A PRETTY GOOD PROGRAM AND CONSIDERING THE EXPANSION OF TK AND THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS THAT WE HAVE LOST IN OUR CHILDCARE PROGRAM, WE ARE DOING PRETTY WELL ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU FIGURE OUR EL OG PROGRAM THAT HAS PROVIDED AFTERSCHOOL SUPPORT AND ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR KIDS. IT CAN ONLY BE USED BACK INTO THE CHILD NUTRITION PROGRAM. THAT MONEY IS SITTING THERE AND WE ARE WORKING ON A PROJECT TO RELOCATE OUR CENTRAL KITCHEN.

NEW FLOOR, SCHOOL DISTRICTS. LACK OF SUFFICIENT FUNDING YEAR-OVER-YEAR BECAUSE WE ARE TIED TO THE ECONOMY. IT IS KIND OF A MISNOMER THE 2%. LACK OF CONTROL OVER FUNDING LEVELS.
THE STATE WANTS US TO GO OUT TO VOTERS AND ASK THEM FOR MORE MONEY. THAT'S THEIR ANSWER TO US FOR HELPING WITH MAINTENANCE NEEDS AND IT IS JUST SOMETHING THAT IS NOT SUSTAINABLE FOR ALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS. COSTS ARE RISING FASTER THAN STATE FUNDING LEVELS. INSURANCE HAS GONE UP 50% A YEAR FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS MAINLY BECAUSE OF THE FIRES THAT WE'VE HAD HERE.
IT'S BECOME VERY CHALLENGING FOR US TO GET INSURANCE AND SOME RECENT LAWS THAT WERE PASSED BY THE STATE THAT OPENED UP STATUTES OF LIMITATIONS HAVE PUSHED DOWN ON US IN LITIGATION GOING BACK TO THE 70S AND 80S. UTILITIES CONTINUE TO RISE AT AN INCREMENTAL LEVEL. I WOULD SAY ANYWHERE BETWEEN 6% AND 12%. NOTHING WE CAN'T MANAGE AT THIS POINT BUT AS WE EXPAND THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY IT IS INCREASING OVERALL UTILITY USAGE. TRANSPORTATION, AGAIN, SIGNIFICANT INCREASES. EVEN NOW WE'VE SEEN FUEL LEVELS TAPER OFF BUT THE GENERAL OVERALL COST OF BUSES, MAINTAINING BUSES AND SALARIES FOR BUS DRIVERS CONTINUES TO OUTPACE WHAT FUNDING LEVELS ARE AS DO BENEFITS . CELL PHONES FOLLOW US NOW INTO EVERY ASPECT OF OUR LIVES, EVEN INTO THE BATHROOMS AND TEACHERS ARE FIGHTING A BATTLE FOR OUR ATTENTION THAT IS BEING DESIGNED FOR THEM TO LOSE. ALGORITHMS HAVE BEEN DESIGNED TO PROFIT OFF OF OUR MINDS AND ENGAGE US FOR AS MANY HOURS AS POSSIBLE. SINCE THE INTRODUCTION OF CELL PHONES INTO DAILY LIFE, THE LENGTH OF ATTENTION SPANS HAVE SHORTENED. STUDENT RATES OF ANXIETY HAVE HEIGHTENED ALONG WITH PRETEEN AND TEENAGER SELF-HARM AND SUICIDE. EATING DISORDER AND BODY IMAGE STRUGGLES ARE AT AN ALL-TIME HIGH THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE. THIS HAS ALL INCREASED SINCE THE INTRODUCTION OF THE CELL PHONE INTO DAILY LIFE AND SCHOOLS SO I WONDER WHEN AS A COMMUNITY WE DECIDED IT'S TIME TO START REGULATING PHONES TO HELP ALLEVIATE SOME OF THESE PROBLEMS. I BELIEVE IT'S UNFAIR TO EXPECT STUDENTS TO MEET CRITERIA WHEN WE ARE BOUND TO DEVICES 24/7 THAT BRING THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD INTO OUR HANDS. FIVE SECONDS ABOARD AND WITHIN SCHOOL CAN COST UP TO AN HOUR OF MINDLESSLY SCROLLING ON SOCIAL MEDIA. I BELIEVE THAT STRICTLY ENFORCING PHONE REGULATIONS OR BANNING THEM, AND ADDICTING MEDIA WOULD HELP STUDENTS PAVE THE WAY TO LOOSEN THE CHOKEHOLD THAT TECH ADDICTION HAS ON CHILDREN AND ADULTS IN OUR COMMUNITY. DIV, THAT IT IS NOT JUST AFFECTING CHILDREN AT SCHOOL . WHEN KIDS COME HOME AND THEY HAVE DIGITAL FATIGUE OR SCREEN TIME FATIGUE THEY ARE MOODY, DEPRESSED, UNMOTIVATED, THEY WANT TO ISOLATE AND IT'S MAKING PARENTS HAVE A VERY HARD TIME CONNECTING WITH KIDS. THE PARENTS HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME IMPLEMENTING BOUNDARIES AT HOME THAT JUST GET TAKEN BACK WHEN THEY ARE AT SCHOOL AND THEY CAN HAVE THE ACCESS TO THE PHONE. THAT IS REALLY CONTRADICTING SOME OF THE FAMILY VALUES THAT PARENTS THAT I WORK WITH ARE TRYING TO IMPLEMENT IN THEIR KIDS. I DON'T THINK THAT ALLOWING KIDS TO HAVE ACCESS TO SMART PHONES BETWEEN CLASSES BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL OR DURING RECESS OR LUNCH IS GOING TO HELP THEM DEVELOP THE SOCIAL SKILLS THAT THEY NEED TO MAKE IT AS SUCCESSFUL ADULTS IN THE COMMUNITY SO I REALLY WANT TO URGE YOU TO THINK OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL AND HOW USAGE DURING SCHOOL IS IMPACTING THE FAMILY AND THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE FAMILY. BUT WHEN YOU ARE COMPETING AGAINST KIDS USING CELL PHONES IT IS REALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP THEM ON TRACK AND VERY FRUSTRATING.I'M BRINGING THIS TO YOU FROM THE TEACHERS POINT OF VIEW.
I'VE HAD A LOT OF COLLEAGUES YOUNG AND OLD WHO HAVE EXPRESSED THEIR FRUSTRATION. WE ARE COMPETING WITH THOSE CELL PHONES AND THE ATTENTION OF KIDS AND IT MAKES IT REALLY DIFFICULT FOR US. SOME OF THE KIDS ARE USING PHONES TO CHEAT.
WHAT WE HAVE TO DO? WE HAVE TO TAKE THEM AND PUT THEM IN THE BACKPACKS BEFORE CLASS BEGINS. I HAVE TO GO BY EACH ROW AND WATCH THEM PUT THEM IN THE BACKPACK WHICH TAKES A VALUABLE TESTING TIME. THE OTHER THING NOT MENTIONED WAS AIR PODS.
CONSTANTLY HAVING TO PATROL THE AISLES TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE NOT DIVIDING THEIR TIME BETWEEN THEIR FAVORITE MUSIC GROUP AND THEIR TEACHER. IT'S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO TEACH THEM IN THOSE SITUATIONS. THEY ARE ADDICTED TO SOCIAL MEDIA, I SEE THE WORD ADDICTION AND I DON'T USE THAT LIGHTLY BUT SOME OF THESE KIDS ARE TRULY ADDICTED. YOU CAN SEE THEM , THEY WANT TO GET ON THAT PHONE SO BADLY. THE OTHER THING IS WE HAVE KIDS USING THE BATHROOMS NOT BECAUSE THEY HAD TO GO TO THE RESTROOM BUT BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO USE THEIR PHONE TO CATCH UP ON WHATEVER INSTAGRAM OR SNAPCHAT THAT THEY WERE DOING AND THEIR TIME AWAY WAS LONGER THAN IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SO THE SCHOOL HAD TO IMPLEMENT A SPECIAL PROGRAM USING PHONES. WE ARE TRYING TO CONSTANTLY CATCH UP AND ARE ALWAYS A STEP BEHIND.

THE HAND BOOK THAT WE HAVE WORKED ON AND DRAFTED FOR THE BOARD'S CONSIDERATION, JUST REFLECTS SOME OF THAT DISCUSSION. AND IS DESIGNED TO BE AN INFORMATIONAL TOOL, OUTLINING THE ROLE AND SCOPE OF OUR MANY DISTRICT ADVISORY COUNCILS AND COMMITTEES. I WOULD SAY -- AND WE CERTAINLY WILL GET INTO IT. THERE'S A SECTION CALLED MEETINGS, AND IT REFERENCES BOTH BROWN ACT, AND GREEN ACT. AS WE DID ADDITIONAL RESEARCH AND FEEDBACK. I WOULD BE PROPOSING THAT WE DO THE HANDBOOK. PARENTS, STUDENTS OR TEACHERS ALSO ANY FAMILIES WHO ARE TRANSITIONING, TO COLLEGE OR MAYBE TO A JOB, LIKE MY DAUGHTER DID. WE'RE OFF AND RUNNING IN THE 2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR. NOT QUITEEP 28 YET. I WANT TO REITERATE WHAT I SAID AT THE LAST MEETING, WHERE WE PASSED THE RESOLUTION. ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT. BUT NOT CENTRAL TO IF YOU'RE CHILD IS SICK. IF THEY'RE SICK, THEY NEED TO STAY HOME. VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL. I'M PLEASED TO REPORT, ACCORDING TO DR. MCLAUGHLIN, THAT IN THE FIRST THREE DAYS OF SCHOOL, OUR ATTENDANCE WAS 97.8%. WE'RE OFF TO A GOOD START. I, TOO, ATTENDED THE TEACHER ORIENTATIONS. I WANT TO SAY, WELCOME. IT WAS PACKED FULL OF NEW AND NEW TO US TEACHERS.THEY SEEMED EAGER TO GET TO THEIR CLASSROOMS AND GET STARTED FOR THE NEW YEAR. THE ONE OPEN HOUSE I ATTENDED WAS THE BE ME PRESCHOOL. ALONG WITH TRUSTEE GOLDBERG. THESE KIDS ARE ADORABLE. THEY'RE JUST REALLY, REALLY LITTLE. AND THE CLASSROOMS ARE BRIGHT AND ENGAGING. AND THIS WAS AN EVENT WITH PARENTS AND THEIR CHILDREN. AND JUST WATCHING THE CHILDREN COME IN AND ENGAGE WITH EACH OTHER AND PLAY WITH ALL OF THE STUFF IN THE CLASSROOMS. WAS REALLY, REALLY FUN. SO I WANT TO THANK THE STAFF AT -- I WAS AT THE ONE AT UNIVERSITY. BUT I WANT TO THANK THE STAFF AT BE ME PRESCHOOL.
