>> MY NAME IS ABIGAIL VAY AND I WOULD LIKE TO UPDATE YOU ON THE LAST MONTH. WE FINISHED WITH A BACK TO SCHOOL BARBECUE TK THROUGH 12TH GRADE STUDENTS CAME TOGETHER. WE HAVE PARTICIPATED IN ENRICHMENT WORKSHOPS. IT INCLUDES FOOD AND COMMUNITY SERVICE. WE STARTED OFFERING A WELLNESS LUNCH ACTIVITY AND STUDENTS HAVE REFRESHING TEA AND PLAY GAMES. ON WELLNESS WEDNESDAYS STUDENTS PLAY MENTAL HEALTH-RELATED GAMES AND ACTIVITIES TO WIN PRIZES. ON WORKSHOP WEDNESDAY, STUDENTS CAN LEARN NEW SKILLS AND GATHER TOOLS ON RELATED TOPICS.

ON FRIENDSHIP BUILDING FRIDAY STUDENTS CAN LISTEN TO MUSIC AND MEET NEW PEOPLE IN A COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT.

OUR COUNSELORS ARE FOCUSED ON SMALL COUNSELING GROUPS BASED ON STUDENT NEEDS. FINALLY WE WOULD LIKE TO CONGRATULATE ALL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMIFINALISTS.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES AND THE EVENTS THAT HAPPENED SINCE MY LAST REPORT AND WILL BE HAPPENING SOON. WE HAVE A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES TO RECOVER CREDITS. WE ARE ON A QUARTER-BASED SYSTEM AND THE FIRST QUARTER IS ENDING SOON.

AT THIS TIME OF YEAR STUDENTS ARE WORKING ON EXTRA CREDIT AND FINISHING UP CLASS WORK TO EARN AS MANY CREDITS AS POSSIBLE.

WE WILL START QUARTER 2 ON OCTOBER 23RD.

TODAY DURING AN EXTENDED PERIOD 2 ALL OF THE STUDENTS FILLED OUT A SURVEY. THIS IDEA EMERGED FROM THE STUDY AS THEY LOOKED AT STUDENT PERFORMANCE AND INCREASING PARENT ENGAGEMENT. IT IS SIMILAR TO PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES WHEN STUDENTS WERE IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

STUDENTS WILL MEET TO SET STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT GOALS.

WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH CVHS SEVERAL HALLWAY BULLETIN BOARDS AND OUR LIBRARY HAVE SPACE DEDICATED TO HISPANIC HERITAGE. THERE ARE LESSONS RELATED TO HIS SPANISH -- HISPANIC HERITAGE AND NEXT WEEK WE WILL HAVE A PINATA ACTIVITY AT LUNCHTIME.

ADDITIONALLY, EARLY LEADERSHIP CLASS IS WORKING TO PREPARE FOR AND PROMOTE UNITY DAY ON OCTOBER 18TH.

OUR STUDENT OF THE QUARTER RECOGNITION IS OCTOBER 18TH IN THE BOARDROOM. THE RECOGNITION IS ALWAYS A SPECIAL EVENT. OUR COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER REMAINS A VERY BUSY PLACE. MRS. GREER HAS BEEN PROMOTING COLLEGE AND CAREER NIGHT ON OCTOBER 5TH.

REPRESENTATIVES CAME TO MEET WITH SEVERAL STUDENTS WHO EXPRESSED INTEREST IN CAREER PATHS WITHIN THE NAVY.

ON OCTOBER 11TH, THEY ARE OFFERING A FIELD TRIP TO AN INSTITUTE FOR CAREERS OF EDUCATION.

I MENTIONED THAT CVHS WAS HOSTING A BLOOD DRIVE.

SEVERAL FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS WILL BE IN HALLOWEEN COSTUMES AND DONATING THAT DAY. REMEMBER, WE WANT YOUR BLOOD SO PRESIDENT GILL AND DR. MC -- MCLAUGHLIN, IF YOU CAN HELP US TO DONATE WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU IN THE BOARDROOM.

NEWBURG PARK HIGH SCHOOL, WELCOME.

SEPTEMBER WAS A MONTH FILLED WELCOMING, HONOR AND FUN.

ON SEPTEMBER 15TH, NEWBURG HIGH SCHOOL BEGAN THE RECOGNITION OF HIS SPAN -- HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH.

AS WE NEAR THE END OF THE MONTH ASG HOSTED A PEP RALLY FOR OUR RIVALRY GAME AGAINST THOUSAND OAKS WITH PERFORMANCES FROM DANCE, CHEER AND BAND. IT WAS OVERALL A FUN AND ENTERTAINING GAME. THAT SAME NIGHT, THE THEATER DEPARTMENT STARTED THEIR ANNUAL 24-HOUR THEATER FESTIVAL.

THE FOLLOWING NIGHT THEY PERFORMED IN A 24-HOUR SPAN.

IT WAS AN AMAZING DAY FOR STUDENTS.

AT LUNCH WE HOSTED OUR ANNUAL CLUB RUSH WHERE STUDENTS FROM THE STUDENT BODY GET TO FIND A WAY TO GET INVOLVED ON CAMPUS.

WE HAD ABOUT 60 GROUPS WHO WERE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE.

LATER THAT EVENING, FOUR OF OUR STUDENTS FROM OUR SCHOOL NEWSPAPER, THE PANTHER PROWLER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE AT RONALD REAGAN LIBRARY IN SIMI VALLEY. OUR STUDENT JOURNALISTS ASKED QUESTIONS AND HAD CONVERSATIONS WITH POLITICIANS INCLUDING OUR VERY OWN GOVERNOR. IT WAS AN HONOR FOR NEWBURY PARK STUDENTS TO BE REPRESENTED AT SUCH AN ESTABLISHED EVENT AND WE ARE PROUD OF OUR ATTENDEES.

MOVING INTO OCTOBER, MONDAY WE KICKED OFF OUR HOME -- HOMECOMING WEEK WHERE WE HAD A RALLY AND ENJOYED PERFORMANCES AND INTRODUCED TO THE HOMECOMING COURT NOMINEES.

IT WAS AN AMAZING EVENT WELL ATTENDED AND A PERFECT WAY TO START A PERFECT WEEK IN. HONOR OF OUR HOMECOMING THEME, THE ROARING 20S WE WORE POLKA DOTS AND GAVE OUT SHIRLEY TEMPLES AT LUNCH. STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY FUN GAMES AT LUNCH TO GET INTO THE HOME -- HOMECOMING MOOD. FRIDAY NIGHT IS OUR HOMECOMING FOOTBALL GAME AGAINST THE AGOURA CHARGERS.

THERE WILL BE A GREAT HALF TIME SHOW AND WE HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE GAME. TO WRAP UP THIS WEEK WE HAVE OUR DANCE ON STAET NIGHT WHICH I KNOW I AM SUPER EAGER FOR.

MOVING FORWARD, WE WILL CELEBRATE OUR LATINX COMMUNITY AS HISPANIC WEEK COMES TO AN END.

NEXT WEEK WE WILL RECOGNIZE BREAST CANCER AWARENESS AND IT WILL BE A PINK OUT AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO SHOWING SUPPORT.

MY NAME IS ASHLEY AND AS THOUSAND OAKS HIGH SCHOOL ASB VICE PRESIDENT, IT IS MY PLEASURE TO PRESENT THE OCTOBER BOARD REPORT FOR THOUSAND OAKS HIGH SCHOOL. COMING OFF OUR SUCCESSFUL HOMECOMING CELEBRATION, I AM HONORED TO PRESENT THIS EVENING. IT HAS BEEN A BUSY, BUT EXCITING MONTH. AS WE HAVE GOTTEN SETTLED INTO THE 23-24 SCHOOL YEAR. WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO HOST OUR FIRST IN PERSON BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT SINCE THE PANDEMIC HAS STARTED AND IT WAS AN INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY TO HOST OUR THOUSAND OAKS HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY ON CAMPUS.

OUR PROGRAMMING STARTED OFF IN THE GYM WITH INTRODUCTIONS FROM SCHOOL LEADERSHIP AS WELL AS A BEAUTIFUL PERFORMANCE FROM OUR CHOIR, BAND AND ORCHESTRATE. OVER 500 PARENTS AND SUPPORTERS ATTENDED OUR BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT AND THEY GOT A CHANCE TO SEE WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO BE A DANCER FOR A -- LANCER FOR A COUPLE HOURS. IN CONTINUING OUR ACTIVITIES, OUR ACTIVITIES ARE A FOCUS ON WHAT WE CAN GIVE OUR STUDENTS.

ASB HAD THE TRADITIONAL SENIOR SUNRISE EVENT.

ASB INVITED ALL SENIORS TO THE FIELD AT 6 A.M. IN THEIR PAJAMAS AND BLANKETS AND PROVIDED BREAKFAST, FRIENDSHIP BRACELET MAKING, GAMES AND OTHER FUN ACTIVITIES.

TWO-THIRDS OF OUR SENIOR CLASS JOINED US ON THIS EARLY FRIDAY MORNING TO SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCH OUR YEAR OF SENIOR ACTIVITIES.

JUST THIS PAST WEEK, THS HOSTED A HOMECOMING WEEK WHICH HAD AN ANNUAL HOMECOMING RALLY AND THEME DRESS UP DAYS EACH DAY AND OUR TRADITIONAL HOMECOMING HALF TIME PARADE WITH FLOATS AND FIREWORKS AND CAPPED OFF THE WEEK WITH OUR HOMECOMING DANCE IN OUR GYM THIS PAST SATURDAY.

OUR HOMECOMING THEME THIS YEAR WAS MUSIC MANIA.

EACH STUDENT GROUP PARTICIPATED BY HIGHLIGHTING A DIFFERENT GENRE OF MUSIC THAT WE ALL LOVE.

HOMECOMING IS ALWAYS A FAVORITE WEEK FOR THS LANCERS AND WE ARE GLAD TO HAVE SO MANY ALUM CONNECTED TO THE COMMUNITY WHO COME TO VISIT US AT THE HOMECOMING GAME.

AS WE LOOK TO THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER, OUR STUDENT SECTION CONTINUES TO SUPPORT OUR BOYS AND GIRLS FOOTBALL TEAMS AND VOLLEYBALL, WATER FOLLOW LOW -- WATER POLO AND GIRLS AND BOYS CROSS COUNTRY. WE HAVE A THEATER PROGRAM IN FULL PREPARATION FOR NOVEMBER SHOWS AND EXCITED ABOUT HOSTING OUR UNIFIED SPORTS BOCCI TOURNAMENT AT THE END OF THE MONTH. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND GO LANCERS. WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL. >> GOOD EVENING BOARD PRESIDENT GILL, BOARD MEMBERS DR. MCLAUGHLIN AND DISTRICT STAFF. I AM THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE FOR WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL. I AM ALSO THE ASSOCIATED STUDENT GOVERNMENT VICE PRESIDENT.

WE WERE HAPPY TO FINALLY HAVE OUR HOMECOMING DANCE BACK IN THE GYM WHICH TOOK PLACE ON SEPTEMBER 9TH.

WE HAD A THOUSAND STUDENTS ATTEND AND IT WAS OVERALL REALLY SUCCESSFUL. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THEY HEADED BACK TO SCHOOL SINCE COVID.

IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THEY COULD GO BACK TO CLASSROOMS AND MEET STUDENTS IN PERSON. MOST WERE IMPRESSED WITH THE SCIENCE BUILDING. OUR CHOIR AND BAND PROGRAMS PERFORMED AND THEY HELPED WITH THE RIGHT CLASSES.

PARENTS GOT TO SEE HOW CHALLENGING IT IS TO WALK THE STAIRS OF THE WESTLAKE CAMPUS. MOST OF THEM GOT TO CLASS ON TIME. LAST FRIDAY WE HAD OUR ANNUAL CLUB RUSH IN WHICH 55 CLUBS PARTICIPATED.

WE ALLOWED CLUBS EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY BE SIMILAR TO OTHERS TO FORM IN ORDER TO ALLOW STUDENTS TO CONNECT WITH

DIFFERENT GROUPS OF PEERS. THE CLUBS THAT ARE SIMILAR WILL COLLABORATE ON THE COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT.

FOR EXAMPLE, OUR UNIFIED SPORTS CLUB, SPARKLES CLUB, LEAF OUT REACH CLUB AND FRIENDSHIP CLUB HAVE THE PURPOSE OF SUPPORTING OUR ELITE PROGRAM. THEIR COMMUNITY PROJECT WILL BE COMBINED TO HELP LEAP STUDENTS. WE HAVE A WIDE RANGE OF CLUBS ON CAMPUS AND IT WAS GREAT TO SEE SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE TO FEEL INCLUDED. WE ALSO HAVE OUR INTEREST GROUP EXPO THIS FRY -- THIS FRIDAY AT LUNCH TO SHOW OUR STUDENT-LEAD INTEREST GROUPS AND SO PROUD OF OUR STUDENT LEADERS ON CAMPUS.

WE STARTED USING 5 STAR TO TRACK STUDENT INVOLVE -- INVOLVE MEANT IN ENGAGEMENT AND ATHLETICS AND WE HAVE SEEN THAT 73% OF OUR STUDENT POPULATION ARE INVOLVED IN ONE OR MORE ACTIVITIES. THE BEGINNING OF SEPTEMBER WAS A WHEUL -- WHIRL WIND AT WESTLAKE AND JUST STARTING OUR CELEBRATION OF HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH.

WE DECIDED TO CONTINUE INTO OCTOBER TO SEE WHAT IS PLANNED INCLUDING MUSIC FRIDAYS BY HISPANIC ARTISTS AND EVEN LOOKING TO INCLUDE DANCE AND MUSIC PERFORMANCES FOR STUDENTS AT LUNCH. WE HOSTED FIVE MEMBERS OF THE WASC COMMITTEE ON OUR CAMPUS TO SHOWCASE OUR ACADEMICS, ACTIVITIES, ATHLETICS AND SCHOOL CULTURE.

THE PROCESS INCLUDED GETTING INPUT FROM STUDENTS, PARENTS, TEACHERS AND STAFF. W*PB OF THE -- ONE OF THE BIG THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT WAS SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND SUPPORT. IT MADE ME PROUD TO BE A WARRIOR. SOME THINGS WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER ARE WORKING WITH OUR SPARKLES AND GSA CLUB TO PLAN AND FACILITATE UNITY DAY.

AND LASTLY OUR FOOTBALL TEAM IE JUST WON THE GOLDEN STATE TENNIS CLASSIC. WE ARE SO PROUD OF ALL OF OUR WARRIORS. THANK YOU.

WE HAVE THE MID-MONTH EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING NEXT MONDAY OCTOBER 9TH AND THEY ARE PROVING HELPFUL FOR COMMUNICATION AND STAYING CONNECTED.

WHEN I VOTE ON RESOLUTIONS I DO IT WITH AN INITIAL STEP I HOPE WILL LEAD TO MORE UNDERSTANDING.

I THINK MOMENTS LIKE LAST WEEK AND HEARING THE GRATITUDE FROM PARENTS THAT THIS MONTH IS BEING ACKNOWLEDGED WAS A REMINDER HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO JUST HAVE THAT PUBLIC ACKNOWLEDGMENT ON AN ISSUE OR A GROUP OF PEOPLE THAT YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT OR CARE ABOUT. THAT WAS IMPORTANT TO HEAR THAT. WE KNOW THERE IS A LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE. THANK YOU FOR THE PARENTS INVOLVED IN THE ADVISORY COUNCIL AND ALL OF OUR ADVISORY COUNCILS. I AM SORT OF IN A DAK ROLE TONIGHT, I GUESS AND I WANTED TO COMMENT ON THE CDAK MEETING THAT WAS YESTERDAY.

IT FEELS LIKE FOREVER, BUT IT WAS YESTERDAY.

THAT'S OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION DISTRICT ADVISORY COUNCIL AND THAT WAS THEIR FIRST MEETING OF THE YEAR AND WANTED TO SHARE SOME THINGS I APPRECIATED ABOUT THE MEETING.

THE LEADERS AND THE ORGANIZERS REALLY MADE, WITH INTENTION, REPEATEDLY REMINDED THEIR NEW MEMBERS THAT THE MORE SEASONED MEMBERS WERE THERE TO HELP AND SUPPORT THEM ALONG THE WAY.

THEY HAVE A LOT OF NEW MEMBERS JOINING THIS YEAR.

AND SO THEY TOOK THE TIME TO GIVE A THOUGHTFUL INTRODUCTION TO A LOT OF THE LOGISTICS AND WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A MEMBER OF CDAK AND TRY NOT TO SCARE THEM, BUT GIVING THEM GREAT INFORMATION AND EVEN INTRODUCING THEM TO WHERE THE DATA SOURCES ARE. I THINK WE OFTEN FORGET HOW IMPORTANT INTRODUCTORY MEETINGS ARE, WHEN WE TRY TO GET NEW MEMBERS ENGAGED AND ACCLIMATED. I BELIEVE THAT EARLY SUPPORT MAKES FOR A SUCCESSFUL AND PRODUCTIVE AND ENGAGED BODY.

THEY HAVE GOALS AND PRIORITIES AND BREAKOUT SESSIONS TO DISCUSS WHICH ARE IMPORTANT. I WANT TO KUDOS TO ALL WHO WERE INVOLVED IN PLANNING THE MEETING.

AND FINALLY I HAD THE PLEASURE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CDAK MEETING YESTERDAY TO GO TO THE CONE ON COALITION -- -- THE CONEJO COALITION WHERE THERE WAS A REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE PARK DISTRICT AND THE CITY COUNCIL AND A REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE NON-PROFIT PARTNERS THAT HAVE TO DO WITH YOUTH AND FAMILY ISSUES.

AT THAT MEETING I LEARNED OF A COUPLE THINGS I WANTED TO SHARE. ONE, CRPD FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IS HAVING IN ADDITION TO THE HAUNTED TRAIL, THEY ARE HAVING A DIA DE LOS MUERTOS EVENT.

CONSCIOUS BUILDING. IT HAS NARCAN AND WOUND CARE AND OTHER ITEMS THAT WILL SERVE THE OVER 400 HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS WHO NEED SUCH THINGS AND REGULARLY USE THE SERVICES IN THE COMMUNITY CONSCIENCE BUILDING.

THESE HAVE TWO NEW TENANTS WHAT IS NAMI AND THE OTHER IS CREATIVE STEPS. IT IS AN ORGANIZATION THAT SERVES INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE CLASSIFIED TO MODERATE TO SEVERELY IDD WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES AS WELL.

IT IS ANOTHER GREAT RESOURCE FOR OUR COMMUNITY.

AFTER SOME OF THE DISCUSSION WE HAD LAST SPRING CONCERNING OUR POST SECONDARY PROGRAM I WAS REALLY INTERESTED IN ATTENDING THE CANEJO OAKS BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT.

IT SEEMS LIKE THE PROGRAM IS CONTINUING TO DEVELOP AND EVOLVE AND THERE ARE MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS IN TERMS OF LEARNING LIFE SKILLS AND CREATING MICROBUSINESSES AND HAVING MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO INTERACT.

I WAS EXCITED TO SEE THE ENERGY AND NEWS.

YEAH OF THOSE IN THE STAFF AND A CROWD OF STUDENTS SHOWING OFF THEIR CLASSROOM. FINALLY, THE CO-FOUNDER OF AN ORGANIZATION CALLED CANCER FIT IS A LOCAL NONPROFIT THAT FOCUSES ON CHILDHOOD CANCER PATIENTS AND SURVIVORS HAS REACHED OUT AND ASKED OUR COMMUNITY TO, QUOTE, UNQUOTE, GO GOLD. THAT MEANS WEAR YELLOW AND GOLD NEXT TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10TH, IN HONOR OF NATIONAL CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH. ACCORDING TO CANCER FIT THERE ARE MORE THAN A DOZEN STUDENTS ACTIVELY IN TREATMENT.

A DOZEN CHILDREN ACTIVELY IN CHILDREN WITHIN OUR STUDENT COMMUNITY PLUS ALL OF THE SURVIVORS WHO ARE NO LONGER IN TREATMENT. THE PURPOSE OF WEARING GOLD IS TO DEMONSTRATE THE CARE AND SUPPORT FOR THESE CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES AND TO HIGHLIGHT THE NEED FOR ADDITIONAL RESEARCH AND FUNDING. I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE A MOMENT TO TALK ABOUT WHAT LEAD ME TO TALK TO YOU BEFORE YOU DISCUSS SOME OF THE POINTS YOU BROUGHT UP AND THERE IS COLLEGE RECRUITING AND IT WILL REQUIRE FLEXIBILITY AS HE ENTERS THE 6TH GRADE. MY DAUGHTER IS IN 6TH GRADE NOW AND A PRE-PROFESSIONAL DANCER AND NEEDING THIS FLEXIBILITY. SHE TRAINS 30 PLUS HOURS A WEEK BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL AND TRAVELS ALL OVER THE U.S. FOR COMPETITION, TRAINING AND WORK ON MANY WEEKENDS.

BOTH ARE STRAIGHT A STUDENTS AS WE VALUE SCHOOL AND ACADEMICS VERY MUCH. THEY WOULD GREATLY BENEFIT FROM HAVING THE ADDITIONAL TIME TO COMPLETE HOMEWORK AND THEIR STUDIES. INDEPENDENT STUDY PE FOR MY DAUGHTER NOW AND MY SON ONCE HE ENTERS 6TH GRADE WILL PROVIDE THEM WITH SOME BREATHING ROOM AS THEY ARE WORKING HARD TO BALANCE THEIR EDUCATION WITH THEIR DREAMS. I STAND HERE ADVOCATING FOR A COMMUNITY OF TALENTED AND DEDICATED KIDS TRYING TO PURSUE THEIR ATHLETIC TKPWROELS AND STILL BEING ABLE TO BENEFIT FROM THE GREAT PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM WE HAVE HERE IN THE CANEJO VALLEY.

ONE ISSUE THAT CAME UP AT THE LAST BOARD MEETING WAS SCHEDULING. HOWEVER, 6TH GRADERS COME OFF THE TRADITIONAL 6TH GRADE SCHEDULE.

AT OUR SCHOOL, SYCAMORE CANYON WE HAVE 7TH GRADERS AND THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS IN INDEPENDENT PE IS MUCH SMALLER.

AT THE LAST MEETING, IT WAS PREDICTED WE ARE LOOKING AT 226 TH GRADERS ACROSS ALL OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS SHOULD WE OPEN IT UP WHICH IS FIVE KIDS PER SCHOOL.

THAT'S A FRACTION OF THOSE ALREADY ACCOMMODATED FROM MATH 7A AND AN EVEN SMALLER AMOUNT FROM THE TOTAL 6TH GRADE POPULATION. I CAN TELL YOU MY DAUGHTER NOW WAS ALREADY EASILY ABLE TO PUT HER ELECTIVE PE AS 5TH AND 6TH PERIOD. I DON'T SEE SCHEDULING TO BE A ROAD BLOCK HERE. THE OTHER ISSUE THAT CAME UP WAS THE SOCIAL/Y MEETINGS -- SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL ASPECT.

I AM NOT HERE TO ARGUE THE VALUE OF THE PE PROGRAM.

HOWEVER, I CAN TELL YOU AS A FAMILY WE ARE STRUGGLING TO KEEP OUR KIDS IN TRADITIONAL SCHOOL WHILE TRAINING AT THEIR CURRENT LEVEL. BUT THEY LOVE THE BENEFITS THEY GET FROM BEING IN SCHOOL IN PERSON AND TKPWAOEG -- BEING A PART OF THE COMMUNITY AND SO DO WE.

HAVING THIS EXTRA TIME WOULD BE IMPACTFUL TO THEM AND THEIR SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WELL BEING.

CONSIDER OPENING UP INDEPENDENT PE FOR 6TH GRADE.

IT IS PRETTY INCREDIBLE. I WAS SITTING HERE REFLECTING BACK AND IT WAS A LITTLE OVER TWO YEARS AGO WE WERE IN THIS SCHOOLROOM AND WE ADOPTED THE STRATEGIC ARTS PLAN AND IT IS A FIVE-YEAR PLAN. THIS POSITION WAS CREATED AND THE VISUAL AND PERFORM -- PERFORMING ART PROGRAM.

AND I AM THE ONLY ONE IN VENTURA COUNTY THAT EXISTS.

FIVE OF THE PEOPLE WOULD ARE CONTRIBUTORS TO THE STRATEGIC ART PLANNER IN THIS ROOM. ONE OF THE MAIN GOALS THAT CAME OUT OF THAT, ONE OF THE FIRST IMPLEMENTATIONS WAS THE ELEMENTARY MUSIC PROGRAM. WORKING WITH OUR PRINCIPALS AND TEACHERS WE HIRED THREE ELEMENTARY MUSIC TEACHERS AND PROVIDED ELEMENTARY MUSIC 30 MINUTES A WEEK TO OUR 4TH AND 5TH GRADERS ACROSS THE DISTRICT.

WE GOT STARTED WITH ALMOST NOTHING.

WE WERE ORDERING INSTRUMENTS AND FIGURING OUT WHAT WE HAD.

4TH AND 5TH GRADE TEACHERS WERE LIKE, WHAT IS GOING ON? IT IS A BRAND-NEW THING.

HERE WE ARE A YEAR LATER AND WE HAVE EQUIPMENT AND WE HAVE SPACES AND WE NOW HAVE SIX ELEMENTARY AND MUSIC TEACHERS THAT SERVICE ALL 17 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

I BELIEVE THAT IS 218 CLASSES THAT THOSE PEOPLE SEE EVERY WEEK AND SERVE MUSIC EDUCATION. I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE THOSE PEOPLE RIGHT NOW IN OUR NEXT SLIDE.

SOME OF THEM ARE FORMER MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPALS.

WE GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE. LAST YEAR WE WERE DISCUSSING CURRICULUM IT WAS, WHAT DO THE KIDS KNOW? THEY COME FROM 218 PLACES AND SCHOOL SITES.

SOME HAD SPECIALISTS, SOME HAD NO MUSIC AND SOME HAD PIANO LESSONS AT HOME. YOU GET TO THE CLASSROOM AND YOU HAVE TO ASSESS. THROUGH THE ESSER3 FUNDS WE INVESTED $10,000 INTO THE MUSIC EQUIPMENT FOR EACH OF THE 17 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN THE

DISTRICT. AND THOSE ARE THE TOOLS THAT THE STUDENTS ARE USING WITH THE GUIDANCE OF THEIR TEACHERS EVERY DAY. I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE NOW MS. SEIKOS WHO WILL TALK ABOUT OUR ART STANDARDS AND THE VERTICAL ALIGNMENT THAT HER AND OUR TEAM CAME UP WITH AT THE

THE THING THAT IS GREAT IS WHEN I BEGIN SCHOOL NEXT YEAR, I WILL KNOW WHAT THOSE STUDENTS HAVE BEEN TAUGHT, SO I DON'T HAVE TO START FROM SQUARE ONE EACH TIME.

THE 5TH TKPWRAOEUDERS -- 5TH GRADERS I HAVE THIS YEAR I KNOW WHAT THEY KNOW. I CAN GO RIGHT 234 -- RIGHT IN AND TEACH WHAT I WANT. EVEN AT THE BEGINNING WE TOOK THEM FROM NOT KNOWING MUSIC AT ALL, THEY WERE PLAYING THE UKULELE BY THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

WE GOT TRAINING FOR TWO WEEKS AND WE ATTENDED EIGHT HOURS A DAY AND GOT CERTIFIED TO -- CERTIFIED SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE CRAZY. ANYWAY, WE GOT THE CERTIFICATION TO GO AHEAD AND TEACH THIS.

IT TIES INTO THE NEXT PART WITH THE STANDARDS ARTISTIC PROCESSES. THE PROCESS IS CREATING AND IMPROVISING AND DOING ALL OF THOSE THINGS.

WE KNOW MORE ABOUT THAT AND LOOK AT THE STANDARDS AND COMBINE ALL THAT TOGETHER. FOR FIRST GRADE, THEY ALREADY KNOW QUARTER NOTES AND 8TH NOTES.

WE TAUGHT THEM THAT. I WILL GIVE THEM CARDS AND LET THEM ARRANGE THEM THE WAY THEY WANT.

THEY CAN PICK AN INSTRUMENT AND LET THEM PERFORM FOR EACH OTHER AND DOT DIFFERENT THINGS THEY HAVE CREATED.

AND SO WE CAN USE THOSE XYLOPHONES AND THE UKULELE AND ALL OF THOSE DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS SO THEY CAN CREATE AND PERFORM AND IMPROVISE, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, TO ME ANYWAY, THEY WILL KNOW WHY THEY MADE THOSE CHOICES AND BE ABLE TO ARTICULATE THAT TO SOMEONE ELSE.

WHY DO I CHOOSE THIS? HOW DID THAT MAKE ME FEEL? WHAT ARE MY GOALS HERE? THAT TO ME IS VERY EXCITING.

BEFORE I GET OFF THIS, TO ME THIS IS SO MUCH MORE THAN THIS.

THEY GAIN CONFIDENCE. THEY FEEL PART OF THE GROUP AND THEY ARE INCLUDED NO MATTER WHAT PHYSICAL OR AO*E -- OR EMOTIONAL ISSUES THEY HAVE. THEY CAN ALL BE SUCCESSFUL IN MUSIC. THEY CAN FEEL LIKE THEY ARE PART OF SOMETHING IMPORTANT. I LOVE BEING PART OF SOMETHING THAT CAN MAKE KIDS BE BETTER PEOPLE.

THERE ARE THE ALIENS. WE ARE ALL TEACHING THE SAME THINGS ACROSS THE BOARD. WE ALL SING AND WE ALL PLAY DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS. NOW WE HAVE SIMILAR INSTRUMENTS AT EVERY SITE SO WE CAN GIVE EACH CHILD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE IN MUSIC. THAT WILL GIVE THIS DISTRICT APPROXIMATELY $2 MILLION ANNUALLY TO SUPPORT ART EDUCATION TK THROUGH 12. 80% HAS TO GO TOWARD INCREASING EDUCATION -- OR STAFFING CREDENTIALED OR NON-CREDENTIALED PEOPLE. WE PUT A TEMPORARY PAUSE ON THE INSTRUCTION MATERIAL AND WE ARE WAITING FOR THE CDE TO GIVE US CLARIFICATION ON THE PROP 28 LANGE -- PROP 28 LANGUAGE.

WE GET THEM MOVING AND GET THEM ACTIVE AND WE GET SMILES ON THEIR FACE. WE GIVE THEM THE CONFIDENCE OF -- THEY START SHARING THINGS WITH US OF WHAT THEY DO AND OTHER INTERESTS AND WE ADAPT TO THAT AND CREATE OTHER ACTIVITIES FOR THEM THROUGH THAT IS WE HAVE HAPPY STUDENTS.

WHEN WE HAVE HAPPY STUDENTS, WE CAN SEE IMPROVEMENT.

THEY ARE PREPARED AND NOT AS SHOCKED IF THEY HAVE TO RUN A CERTAIN DISTANCE, BUT THEY HAVE THE SKILLS WHERE THEY GO, OH, OKAY. I HAVE THIS.

I LEARNED HOW TO THROW A BALL A LITTLE BETTER THAN I HAD ORIGINALLY BEEN TAUGHT. AND SO NOW I CAN TAKE THAT SKILL AND ADAPT IT TO ANOTHER SPORT.

IT GETS THE MIND AND BODY FEELING GOOD.

THE INFLICKS OF ASH -- DASH INFLICKS OF AUSTERITY IS A TERRIBLE CHOICE. WHAT IT FORCES PEOPLE TO DO WHEN THERE ARE A FEW DROPS OF WATER IN THE GLASS AND MANY PEOPLE ARE THIRSTY, PEOPLE HAVE TO SCRAMBLE AND FIGHT WITH ONE ANOTHER. I DO NOT WANT OUR LCAP BUDGET COMMITTEE TO PIT GROUPS OF OUR STUDENTS AGAINST ONE ANOTHER.

IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO SEPARATE PROGRAMS FROM PEOPLE.

I DON'T HAVE A PARTICULAR CHARGE TO OFFER, BUT I WANTED TO PLACE THIS DISCUSSION INTO PERSPECTIVE ABOUT WHERE WE ARE, WHAT OUR RESPONSIBILITY IS AS A BOARD AND WHAT INFORMATION WOULD BE HELPFUL TO US, AND THE LAST THING I WILL SAY IS ONE OF MY ROLES AS A TRUSTEE IS TO ADVOCATE TO NOT ACCEPT A STATUS QUO WHERE WE ARE SYSTEMATICALLY UNDER FUNDED, BUT TO ADVOCATE THAT WE BECOME FULLY AND FAIRLY FUNDED.

INSTEAD WE ARE THE ENGINE OF THE ECONOMY AND FUND US FIRST.

THAT'S MY MESSAGE. I AM OFFERING THIS NOT TO POINT THE DIRECTION FOR WHAT THE CHARGE FOR THE COMMITTEE SHOULD BE, BUT JUST TO SAY THAT WE ARE IN A DIFFERENT PLACE THAN WHEN THE COMMITTEE STARTED. THIS YEAR WE ARE NOT CUTTING, BUT WE JUST SAW WHAT IS AT-RISK IN THE FUTURE.

IT IS SOME OF THESE PROGRAMS THAT ONCE WE HAVE OFFERED THEM, IT IS GOING TO BE VERY, VERY DIFFICULT TO TAKE THEM AWAY, AND THAT WOULD BE VERY HARD TO ADVOCATE FOR. SO I'M LOOKING AT IT AS PERHAPS IF THE BUDGET LCAP COMMITTEE CAN LOOK AT SOME OF THESE ITEMS THAT MIGHT BE A PRODUCTIVE USE OF TIME.

WE TALKED ABOUT CAMPUS SAFETY UH -- ASSISTANTS AND THERE WAS A METHODOLOGY OF RANKING THOSE. AT THE END THE STUDENTS EXPRESSED THEIR FEELINGS ABOUT IT AND HOW IMPORTANT IT WAS TO THEM. THAT WAS SOMETHING THE TEACHERS AND PRINCIPALS DIDN'T UNDERSTAND.

HEARING THE STUDENTS ARTICULATE HOW THEIR SENSE OF SECURITY WAS ENHANCED BY HAVING THESE CAMPUS SAFETY ASSISTANTS.

I'M NOT SURE WE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN THAT KIND OF FEEDBACK IF YOU DIDN'T HAVE ALL OF THESE PEOPLE IN ONE ROOM.

IT IS ONE EXAMPLE AND A GOOD ONE OF WHY THIS GROUP CAN BE

NOT TO DIMINISH THE VALUE OF THE CONVERSATIONS THAT HAPPEN IN THAT ROOM BECAUSE THEY ARE POWERFUL, BUT I STILL WANT US TO DEFINE A CHARGE FOR THAT COMMITTEE THAT IS DIFFERENT THAN THE OTHER DAKS AND DIFFERENT THAN THE DISCUSSIONS WE HAVE OPENLY HERE IN THE PUBLIC AND THE BOARDROOM.

AGAIN, IF WE ARE NOT CUTTING THAT ADVISORY ISN'T OF AS MUCH VALUE TO US. THE PROGRAMS WE JUST HEARD ABOUT, MUSIC AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION, WE INVESTED A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF ENERGY AND RESOURCES TO BRING THOSE TO OUR STUDENTS. IT SEEMS AMOUNTS ODD TO -- IT SEEMS A LITTLE ODD TO SAY ARE THEY OF VALUE? WE JUST LAUNCHED THEM AND WE DID SO WITH TREMENDOUS INTENTION.
