I'M UNCOMFORTABLE HERE. I WORK FOR PARKO CENTRAL KITCHEN IN THOUSAND OAKS. I HAVE BEEN RETALIATED TWICE FOR BEING A WHISTLE BLOWER. I HAVE APPROACHED MANAGEMENT AND I HAVE BASICALLY BEEN RETALIATED AGAINST BECAUSE NOW THINGS ARE IMPROVING AND THINGS HAVE BEEN ALTERED.

THERE WERE VIOLATIONS ON THE VC SAFE DINER WEBSITE.

AND ISSUES THAT HAVE BEEN WORKED ON.

AND I APPRECIATE THAT THEY HAVE BEEN WORKED ON.

I WORK IN THE CENTRAL KITCHEN AND EXTREMELY HAPPY THERE.

AND I HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH ANY STAFF MEMBERS THERE.

I HAVE NOT BEEN WRITTEN UP. I HAVE NOT BEEN APPROACHED BY ANY OTHER EMPLOYEE THAT THERE ARE PROBLEMS. I AM VERY NERVOUS. THERE HAS BEEN FOOD ISSUES WITH FROZEN AND REFROZEN FOOD. A LOT OF PROCESSED FOOD.

THERE WERE CEILING TILES THAT FELL.

NOW THE CEILING HAS BEEN REPLACED, AFTER IT WAS SCREWED TOGETHER FOR THE FIRST TIME AND THE PIECES FELL TO THE FLOOR.

THE KITCHEN IS OLD. I UNDERSTAND IT'S OLD.

BUT WE NEED SUPPLIES THAT WE HAVE ASKED FOR FOR OVER TWO YEARS. AND WE HAVE ASKED THAT THE CHILDREN GET A LITTLE BETTER QUALITY OF FOOD, WE HAVE DONE SOME THINGS THAT WE AS STAFF MEMBERS WOULD NOT DO.

I'M HERE BY MYSELF BECAUSE THIS WAS A LAST MINUTE THING FOR ME.

MY HUSBAND HAD A MEDICAL APPOINTMENT.

I DON'T WANT TO CHANGE SCHOOLS. I DON'T WANT TO ALTER MY LIFE BECAUSE IT'S A HARDSHIP AT THE SAME TIME, ON A PERSONAL LEVEL BECAUSE MY HUSBAND IS A CANCER SURVIVOR.

I HAVE OBLIGATIONS AFTER MY SHIFT.

I FEEL VALUABLE THERE. I FEEL I MADE A CHANGE THERE.

I DON'T WANT TO BE RETALIATED AGAINST FOR APPROACHING CONCERNS OF A KITCHEN THAT IS EXTREMELY OLD.

THEY SPENT THE LAST EIGHT SUMMERS WITH NO AIR CONDITIONING. THEY PUT SWAMP COOLERS UP IN THE KITCHEN. WE HAVE MOVED AND ALTERED THINGS AND SHIFTED SUPPLIES AND THROWN OUT OLD FOOD.

WE HAVE PROGRESS BEING MADE NOW.

I KNOW IT'S BECAUSE I INITIATED THINGS THAT WERE A PROBLEM.

I DON'T KNOW HOW ELSE TO EXPLAIN IT EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT I BECAME A WHISTLE BLOWER. I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THAT THAT WAS HONESTLY, THAT WAS THE TERM THAT I WAS.

BUT THAT IS WHAT I AM. I HAVE APPROACHED IT WITH THE UNION. I HAVE APPROACHED IT WITH MANAGEMENT. I HAVE BEEN ADVISED TO CHANGE SCHOOLS AND BASICALLY THAT IS PRETTY MUCH WHAT I'M TOLD.

IT'S NOT A DISCUSSION. IT'S NOT AN OPEN CONVERSATION.

I FEEL LIKE I'VE BEEN KIND OF BEAT UP ON FOR ADDRESSING THE FOOD FOR THE CHILDREN. IT'S PROCESSED, IT'S FROZEN.

WE'VE HAD EXPIRED PRODUCTS. HOT DOG BUNS SEVEN YEARS OLD.

CHEESE. MELTED BUTTER AND MILK AND FROZEN FOR A WEEK AND THEN SERVED TO THE CHILDREN.

>> KAREN MYER. >> DURING THE MONTH OF JANUARY, I HAD THE PLEASURE OF ATTENDING A PRESENTATION GIVEN BY TWO SHERIFFS, ONE OF WHOM IS CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER PROGRAM.

I WAS ABLE TO SPEAK WITH THE OFFICER AFTER THE PRESENTATION.

AND I ASKED IF HE EVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK AT A SCHOOL BOARD MEETING ABOUT THE MANY SERVICES THE SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS PROVIDE AND THE EXTENSIVE TRAINING THAT THEY RECEIVE TO ENABLE THEM TO DO THEIR JOBS.

HE SAID NO. HE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY.

BUT HIS DIFFICULTY WAS GETTING ON THE AGENDA.

I'M HERE TONIGHT TO REQUEST THAT YOU CONTACT THE SHERIFF AND INVITE HIM TO GIVE A BRIEF PRESENTATION AT A FUTURE BOARD MEETING. I AM CONCERNED BECAUSE I HAVE HEARD THAT THERE ARE SOME PARENTS WHO WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER PROGRAM ELIMINATED.

IT'S A VALUABLE PROGRAM THAT NEEDS TO BE PRESERVED AND POSSIBLY EXPANDED. RESOURCE OFFICERS WORK CLOSELY WITH PRINCIPALS AND ADMINISTRATORS WHO APPRECIATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND INPUT. THEY PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL SERVICES TO STUDENTS, TEACHERS, STAFF AND PARENTS. CONDUIT BETWEEN FAMILIES AND LOCAL SOCIAL SERVICES.

THEY'RE THERE TO PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN AND YOUR STAFF.

PARENTS AND MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY CAN BENEFIT FROM LEARNING ABOUT THIS PROGRAM DIRECTLY FROM THE SOURCE.

IT WOULD HELP TO DISPEL MANY OF THE MISCONCEPTIONS AND MISINFORMATION SURROUNDING THIS PROGRAM.

I HOPE THAT YOU WILL CONTACT THE SHERIFF AND SET UP A TIME AT A FUTURE AGENDA TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE COMMUNITY ON THE BENEFITS OF THIS IMPORTANT PROGRAM.

I WOULD NOTE THAT A NUMBER OF ANONYMOUS COMPLAINTS HAVE GONE TO THE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT AND LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT AND NONE OF THESE COMPLAINTS OR INVESTIGATIONS HAVE RETURNED ANY FINDINGS. ALSO FOR OUR SROS, JUST TO NOTE THAT WE'VE RECENTLY HAD OUR SROS AT A DAC MEETING THIS YEAR, THAT PRESENTED TO OUR ADVISORY COUNCIL. THERE HAS BEEN NO CONVERSATION FROM THIS BOARD OR ANY SUGGESTIONS TO REMOVE SROS FROM OUR CAMPUSES. DR. HAYEK JUST PRESENTED MONDAY NIGHT AND SPECIFICALLY SPOKE ABOUT OUR RELATIONSHIP AND THE ABILITY TO WORK WITH OUR SROS IN A POSITIVE MANNER.

SO HOPEFULLY THAT CLARIFIES BOTH OF THOSE MATTERS.

I KNOW IT'S A BIGGER DEAL FOR THE STUDENTS, BECAUSE IT'S A NEW SLATE. BUT HAPPY NEW SEMESTER ANYWAY.

I DON'T HAVE MUCH TO REPORT SINCE OUR NEXT OFFICIAL MEETING WON'T BE UNTIL LATER THIS MONTH.

BUT WE ARE PLANNING A SPECIAL MEETING FOR THE 6TH TO GO OVER THE INPUT WE GOT AT THE LAST BOARD MEETING ABOUT BOARD 9150.

ADDITIONALLY, THE MIDDLE SCHOOL ADVISORY GROUP MET YESTERDAY AND CONTINUED THEIR DISCUSSIONS FROM THE LAST MEETING ABOUT IMPROVING SCL ADMINISTRATION AND ADDRESSING PROFANITY AROUND CAMPUSES AND WHAT CAN BE DONE IN BOTH UNIVERSAL AND SCHOOL

SPECIFIC WAYS. A VARIETY OF SOLUTIONS, BETTER INCORPORATING SCL TOPICS, REDUCING AND ADDING A COUNSELOR INTERVENTION ASPECT. THEY ALSO VOICE THE INTEREST ON BEING A PART OF THE WORK BEING DONE ON IMPROVING THE FOOD QUALITY AROUND THE CAMPUSES. THAT IS ALL I HAVE TO REPORT ON THAT. THANK YOU.

I DIDN'T WANT TO JINX THIS AT THE LAST MEETING, I WANTED TO THANK RICHARD BLAKE. HE IS THE GUY WHO IS ENABLES ALL OF YOU VIEWING. I WANTED TO THANK HIM FOR GETTING OUR CLOSED CAPTIONING SYSTEM SUCCESSFULLY UP AND RUNNING AT OUR LAST MEETING. I KNOW HE HAS SPENT THE PAST TWO MONTHS TO OUR VENDOR TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

THANK YOU TO MR. BLAKE. SINCE LAST BOARD MEETING, I ATTENDED SEVERAL PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETINGS.

ALWAYS FOUND THE TIME THAT I SPENT LISTENING VERY ENLIGHTENING AND IMPORTANT TO HEAR AS A TRUSTEE.

I WANT TO THINK ALL OF THE PARENTS FOR SPENDING THEIR TIME AND ENERGY TO HELP US IMPROVE OUR DISTRICT AND KEEP US MOVING FORWARD. THESE ARE NOT SHORT MEETINGS.

SO IT'S DEFINITELY A TIME COMMITMENT ON THEIR PART.

JUST AS AN ASIDE TO ECHO ON WHAT DR. MCLAUGHLIN SAID ABOUT THE SROS. AS A PREVIOUS DAC MEMBER, I HAD THE EXPERIENCE OF HEARING THE SHERIFF COME AND SPEAK TO DISCUSS THE PROGRAM. I PERSONALLY INVITED OUR SRO TO COME AND SPEAK TO PARENT ASSOCIATION MEETINGS.

MOVING ON, I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THE CELEBRATION AND RECOGNITION OF CYPRUS ELEMENTARY BEING OFFICIALLY DESIGNATED AN IB SCHOOL.

IT WAS JUST ON AN ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS.

LATER ON IN THE MEETING, WE'RE GOING TO GET TO SEE AN ENTIRE PRESENTATION ON EXACTLY WHAT THIS IS AND WHAT BEING AN IB SCHOOL MEANS TO OUR STUDENTS AT CYPRUS.

I WANTED TO TAKE THIS TIME TO OFFER MY DEEP APPRECIATION TO THE TEACHERS AND STAFF AT THAT SCHOOL.

WHO HAVE SEEN THIS THROUGH FOR THE PAST THREE, IF NOT LONGER YEARS. TO BE ABLE TO SAY HOW FORTUNATE WE ARE TO OFFER THE PROGRAM. ANOTHER THANK YOU TO RICHARD BLAKE. HE ACTUALLY HAD A DRONE FLYING OVERHEAD AT THIS EVENT AND CAPTURE THIS EXPERIENCE.

EARLIER THIS WEEK, I ATTENDED THE VENTURA COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD ASSOCIATION DINNER MEETING. THE TOPIC WAS SCHOOL SAFETY.

OUR VERY OWN DR. HAYEK WAS ONE OF THE PANELISTS.

HE DID THE DISTRICT PROUD. NOT ONLY DID HE DO A GREAT JOB PRESENTING, HOW HE PRESENTED, BUT WHAT HE PRESENTED.

MULTI-TIERED APPROACH THAT WE USE IN OUR SAFETY PLANNING.

HE MADE THE POINT THAT IT'S NOT ABOUT PUTTING FENCES AROUND OUR SCHOOLS OR PUTTING A CAMERA IN EVERY ENTRANCE, THAT IS ONE ASPECT, BUT IT REALLY IS ABOUT PREVENTION AND THREAT ASSESSMENT AND HAVING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS.

I DO APPRECIATE DR. HAYEK AND THANK HIM FOR BEING PART OF THAT PANEL. FINALLY, TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH. EACH WERE INCLUDED IN RESOLUTIONS THAT THIS BOARD ADOPTED. FIRST NEXT WEEK IS NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK, STARTING FEBRUARY 6TH.

I WANTED TO GIVE A SHOUT-OUT TO OUR SCHOOL COUNSELORS.

WE KNOW THAT OUR STUDENTS NEED A VARIETY OF SUPPORT, BOTH IN AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM. ACADEMIC AND OTHERWISE.

OUR SCHOOL COUNSELORS ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE NETWORK OF SUPPORT FOR OUR STUDENTS. SECONDLY, AS TRUSTEE SYLVESTER MENTIONED, OF COURSE IT'S FEBRUARY 1ST, WHICH MEANS IT'S THE FIRST DAY OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH.

WE KNOW THAT BLACK HISTORY IS AMERICAN HISTORY. AND IT SHOULD BE LEARNED AND LEARNED FROM YEAR-ROUND.

BUT WE ALSO KNOW THERE IS GOOD REASONS WHY WE NEED A SPECIAL MONTH TO DESIGNATE IT TO HIGHLIGHT AND CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY AND BLACK AMERICANS AND ALL THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS.

SO I INTEND TO SPEND SOME TIME THIS MONTH INTENTIONALLY LEARNING ABOUT EVENTS AND PEOPLE THAT MAYBE I DIDN'T KNOW BEFORE. I THINK MANY ADULTS, LIKE MYSELF MAY FEEL FRUSTRATED AT TIMES THAT WE DIDN'T LEARN MORE

THIS IS IMPORTANT AS FAR AS AMERICAN HISTORY AND BLACK HISTORY AND IT SHOULD BE A YEAR LONG PRESENTATION, BUT IT'S GOOD TO EMPHASIZE IT FOR THE MONTH. SO WHY I'M ALWAYS EXCITED TO SAY HAPPY SCHOOL COUNSELOR WEEK. NEXT WEEK, MAKE SURE THAT YOUR COUNSELORS GET RECOGNITION. SAY NICE THINGS TO THEM.

I ALSO WAS AT ONE TIME PRESIDENT OF THE CALIFORNIA OF SCHOOL COUNSELOR ASSOCIATION, WHICH IS THEY SHIFTED WORDS NOW IT'S A DIFFERENT ORGANIZATION. I WAS ONCE THAT.

I AM SO HAPPY THAT WE TAKE THE TIME TO RECOGNIZE THE CRUCIAL ELEMENTS OF MENTAL HEALTH NOW. WHEN I WAS GOING AROUND COUNSELING WAS THE FIRST PLACE TO MAKE CUTS WHEN YOU HAD A BUDGET CRUNCH. IT WAS ALWAYS BECAUSE IT WAS AN ADDED EXTRA. IT'S NICE TO HAVE COUNSELORS IF WE CAN AFFORD THEM. IT PLEASES ME HOW MUCH WE RECOGNIZE THAT. AND SO I'M PROUD TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH CVUSD, AS A LEADER, BUT IMPLEMENTING THE MENTAL, SOCIAL EMOTIONAL HEALTH, INSTRUMENTAL IN ACADEMIC SUCCESS. WITH MENTAL HEALTH GRANTS, AND THE REASON I'M BRINGING THIS UP NOW, BECAUSE LIKE WAS ALREADY SAID, I GO TO DAC MEETINGS AND EVERY DAC, WE HAVE PRESENTATIONS BY OUR ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF, DR.

IGGINS AND DR. WHITE AND IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO ME THAT WE PUT AN ELEMENT OF IMPORTANCE ON MENTAL HEALTH.

THE FACT THAT MENTAL HEALTH IS CRUCIAL FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS.

IF WE DON'T HAVE MENTAL SOCIAL HEALTH, THE REST IS LESS IMPORTANT. SO I WANT TO SAY THAT.

AND RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF THAT.

ALSO, RECOGNIZE AGAIN, THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. I WANT TO CONGRATULATE YOU.

I KNOW WE'RE GOING TO GET A PRESENTATION IN A LITTLE BIT.

WE DO HAVE AN INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM AT OUR ONE OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS, N NEWBERRY. IT'S A GROUP OF STUDENTS WHO ARE A PART OF IT. WE HAVE HAD QUESTIONS, EVEN FROM PARENTS, OKAY, NOW WE'RE AN IB SCHOOL, HOW DO I GET MY CHILD ONCE I'M AT THAT SCHOOL. THERE IS NOTHING.

ENTIRE SCHOOL IS AN INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE WORLD SCHOOL. ON THE NEXT SLIDE, THIS IS OUR CYPRESS MISSION STATEMENT. IB REQUIRES THAT WE HAVE A MISSION STATEMENT THAT THEY APPROVE.

THE WHAT IS THAT WE'RE GOING TO BUILD STUDENTS CAPABLE OF GUIDING THEIR OWN LEARNING AND MOLDING THEIR OWN FUTURE. SO BUILDING VERY CONFIDENT, INDEPENDENT STUDENTS. ON THE NEXT SLIDE.

VERY INQUIRY BASED. IT'S TRANS DISCIPLINARY.

BY BUILDING THAT WHOLE CHILD, THEY REALLY FOCUS ON TEN LEARNER PROFILE TRAITS THAT THEY FEEL REALLY DEVELOP A WHOLE LEARNER. AND SO YOU CAN SEE SOME OF THESE ARE BEING PRINCIPLED, GOOD COMMUNICATORS, INQUIRERS, CARING, RISK TAKERS, ALL OF THESE THINGS WE WOULD PROBABLY LOOK AT AS BEING GREAT AMONGST OUR LEARNERS.

NOT ONLY DOES OUR SCHOOL REQUIRE KIND OF FOCUSED ON THESE. BUT THE TEACHERS ARE REQUIRED TO TIE SEVERAL OF THESE INTO EACH OF THEIR UNITS OF INQUIRY AND PROVE HOW THEY ARE GOING ABOUT HITTING ON THOSE THROUGHOUT THE SIX TRANSDISCIPLINARY UNITS THAT HAVE TO BE TAUGHT THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR.

STUDENTS STUDY THESE SIX THEMES EVERY YEAR AND TAKE A DEEP DIVE INTO SPECIFIC PROBLEMS THAT HELP THEM BETTER UNDERSTAND THE WORLD. ONE OF THE THEMES IS HOW WE ORGANIZE OURSELVES AND DEPENDING ON THE GRADE LEVEL OR WHAT THE STUDENTS ARE ASKING ABOUT, THEY MIGHT GO INTO THESE BIG IDEAS. YOU'LL SEE TWO MORE ON THE NEXT SLIDE. SO AS YOU CAN SEE, EACH THEME HAS VARIOUS BIG IDEAS FOR LEARNERS TO FOCUS ON.

IN SECOND GRADE, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I SPOKE WITH THE TEACHERS ABOUT WAS HOW TO USE HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES TO START THE INQUIRY. ONE OF THESE PHOTOS IS STUDENTS MAKING BRIDGES. THEY DO A HANDS-ON EXPERIMENT AND THEN THEY TALK ABOUT WHAT THEY WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT.

THAT LEADS TO LEARNING. AND THEN IN THIRD GRADE, LIKE I SAID, I COULD SPEAK TO THAT ONE BETTER BECAUSE THAT IS THE ONE I TEACH. WE'RE CURRENTLY INQUIRING INTO HOW THE CHANGES AND HABITATS AFFECT LIVING THINGS.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO IS CHANGE THE ASSESSMENTS AND HAVE A VARIETY OF ASSESSMENTS.

SO THINGS LIKE PROJECTS, COLLABORATION, RESEARCH AND THERE IS A LITTLE FLIP GRID VIDEO HERE.

AND THIS IS A RESPONSE TO WHAT THE HUMAN IMPACT IS ON THE ENVIRONMENT. AND WHY ANIMALS ARE ENDANGERED.

THE GREAT THING ABOUT FLIP GRID TOO IS ALL OF THE STUDENTS CAN SEE THE OTHER STUDENTS'S RESPONSES.

THIS IS A THIRD GRADER RESPONDING TO THAT.

>> WELL, I'M EXCITED TO BE HERE BECAUSE THE IB PROCESS FEELS LIKE IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME. ONE THING THAT I LIKE ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM IS IT'S A REFLECTIVE TEACHING PROCESS. I FEEL LIKE WE'RE LEARNING AS WE TEACH THESE UNITS, WE SEE WHAT RESONATES, WHAT NEEDS TO BE TWEAKED. THE GREAT PART IS THAT THE STUDENTS ARE REFLECTING UPON THEIR LEARNING AND GIVING THE TEACHERS FIELD FEEDBACK. IT FEELS VERY FULL CIRCLE.

THAT HAS BEEN A CHANGE FOR ME IN MY TEACHING PRACTICE.

IN FOURTH GRADE, WHAT MAKES MOST SENSE AND WHAT HAS BEEN GREAT FOR THESE UPPER ELEMENTARY KIDS IS THE ENGAGEMENT PIECE. AND REALLY PLANNING LESSONS THAT FOCUS ON THINGS THAT THE STUDENTS ARE INTERESTED IN AND THINGS THAT CONNECT TO THEIR REAL LIVES.

SO SOME OF THESE PICTURES HERE, THESE ARE MATCHBOXCARS WHICH ARE A BIG HIT IN FOURTH GRADE. THIS IS A UNIT.

STUDENTS ARE WORKING ON IN REGARDS TO STARTS WITH ENERGY POTENTIAL AND KINETIC ENERGY AND MAKING MEASUREMENTS AND THEN WE START TALKING ABOUT DIFFERENT TYPES OF ENERGY, FOSSIL FUELS, RENEWABLE ENERGY. AND REALLY LAST YEAR WAS A BIG AREA OF INTEREST, SO THE STUDENTS DUG A LITTLE DEEPER AND KIND OF LOOKED AT WHAT THE RESULTS WERE FOR THAT.

WHICH LED TO AN ACTION PIECE, AS THEY REALIZED THE IMPACT OF USING FOSSIL FUELS AND HOW THAT AFFECTED ANIMALS.

AND ACTUALLY, A CLASS GOT TOGETHER AND DECIDED TO SAVE THE POLAR BEARS, MAKE POSTERS, TALK TO OTHER STUDENTS WITHIN CYPRESS TO LET THEM KNOW ABOUT THE KNOWLEDGE THEY LEARNED AND HOW TO MAKE CHANGES. IT'S MOTIVATING TO STUDENTS WHEN THEY'RE INTERESTED IN THEIR LEARNING.

BIG GAME CHANGER AS A TEACHER, I WILL TELL YOU THAT.

THERE WAS ALSO A FIFTH GRADE SLIDE.

SO IN FIFTH GRADE, SOME OF THE WORK THAT THEY'RE DOING HERE, THEY'RE STUDYING THE WATER CYCLE.

AND REALLY KIND OF MAKING THIS COME TO LIFE.

SO FOR EXAMPLE, THIS YEAR, THE FIFTH GRADERS ARE GOING TO THE MUNICIPAL WATER PLANT, AND THEY'RE GOING TO BE SPEAKING WITH AN EXPERT THERE TO LEARN ABOUT YOU KNOW, WHAT DOES IT MEAN BEING IN A DROUGHT. WELL, WE'VE JUST HAD ALL OF THIS RAIN SO LET'S TALK ABOUT RECLAIMING THE WATER.

AND WHAT DOES THAT PROCESS MEAN. SOMETHING THAT IMPACTS THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES. WHICH AGAIN, BRINGS THAT

IN ADDITION TO THAT, THEY CONNECTED SOME OF THEIR SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS IN REGARDS TO EARLY EXPLORERS TO HAVE A MORE RELEVANT CONNECTION AND WERE ABLE TO STUDY AND CHOOSE REAL LIFE EXPLORERS THAT THEY WERE INTERESTED IN. PEOPLE WHO TRAVELLED THE AMAZON, PEOPLE WHO CLIMBED MOUNT EVEREST AND MAKE CONNECTIONS THAT WAY AS WELL. OVERALL, WHAT I'VE SEEN MAKING A DIFFERENCE WITH IB IS THEY'RE LEARNING HOW TO WORK IN GROUPS, WHICH IS AN ABSOLUTE SKILL. AND NEEDS TO KIND OF BE TAUGHT.

AND I THINK WHAT IS GREAT IS THAT THEY'RE REFLECTING AFTER THEY'RE DOING THIS GROUP WORK, WHAT IS WORKING, WAS I LISTENING TO MY PARTNERS,WAS IT DIFFICULT TO WORK WITH SOMEONE WHO WANTED TO DO EVERYTHING. IS IT HARD FOR ME TO DELEGATE WORK. SO WE'RE HOPING AND WE'RE HOPEFUL THAT SORT OF PRACTICING THESE SKILLS AND REFLECTING AND LEARNING FROM THESE SKILLS WILL HELP THEM AS THEY MOVE ON TO MIDDLE SCHOOL AND BEYOND. I THINK THAT BRINGS US TO A QUESTION SLIDE. BUT AS I WAS LISTENING TO THE PRESENTATION, I JUST WANT TO PUT IN A COUPLE OF MORE INFORMATION THAT MIGHT ACTUALLY ANSWER SOME OF THE QUESTIONS THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE. CYPRESS STILL TEACHES ALL OF THESE STANDARDS, THE TEACHERS SPEND A LOT OF TIME GOING THROUGH THE STORIES, AND PUTTING THEM IN AN ORDER THAT MAKES SENSE TO UTILIZE THEM TO HELP TEACH THESE UNITS.

THEY INCORPORATE THE MATH SKILLS, YOU SAW THE CARS, MEASURING, SO THEY INCORPORATE ALL OF THE STANDARDS AND CURRICULUM THAT DISTRICT USES IN ELEMENTARY, AS PART OF THE TRANSDISCIPLINARY UNITS. THE OTHER PIECE THAT MS. WHITE WAS MENTIONING WAS THAT REFLECTIVE PIECE.

THAT IS A REQUIRED PIECE OF THE IB.

AND I THINK IT'S AN INVALUABLE PIECE THAT REALLY IMPROVES THIS PROGRAM. THERE WAS ONE LAST THING, BUT I THINK IT WILL COME UP IN QUESTIONS.

SO THAT COMES OBVIOUSLY WITH A COST THERE.

THERE ARE YEARLY COSTS AS PART OF THE PROGRAM.

YOU GUYS THINK OF OTHER? WE ARE REQUIRED TO -- EVERYONE THAT WORKS WITH STUDENTS ON OUR CAMPUS MUST BE IB TRAINED.

AND SO JUST ATTENDING THAT TRAINING.

I BELIEVE WE'RE AT THE POINT WHERE EVERY TEACHER ON OUR CAMPUS IS TRAINED. HALFWAY WITH ALL OF OUR SPECIALISTS. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I'VE BEEN WORKING ON IS A CYCLICAL BUDGET, TAKING OUR TEAM AND PROBABLY EVERY FOUR YEARS CYCLING PEOPLE THROUGH SO THAT WE STAY UP-TO-DATE WITH THE TRAINING.

WE HAVE HAD MANY STUDENTS BE VERY SUCCESSFUL IN THE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM WITHOUT HAVING ANY PRIMARY YEARS OR MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM. I JUST FEEL THAT THE PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAM BUILDS A STRONG FOUNDATION TO WHEREVER THEY ARE GOING TO GO. WHETHER THEY END UP IN AN IB PROGRAM AT A HIGH SCHOOL, OR MIDDLE SCHOOL THAT DOESN'T HAVE SPECIFIC -- WE DO HAVE SPANISH AT ALL OF OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS.

SO THAT CARRIES ON. I SEE WHERE EDUCATION IS GOING AND THAT INQUIRY AND THAT YOU KNOW, STUDENT LED.

I JUST CAN'T IMAGINE THAT THEIR NEEDS ARE NOT GOING TO BE MET AT OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS. THERE ARE OTHER PROGRAMS AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS THAT DO A LOT IN LINE WITH WHAT IB STANDS FOR.

SO I THINK RIGHT NOW, HIGH SCHOOL AND THE PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAM MIGHT BE KIND OF STAND-ALONE PROGRAMS. I THINK IF WE EVER DO END UP WITH A GREAT MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM, FABULOUS. WE'RE CREATING A GREAT FOUNDATION OF LEARNING AT OUR SCHOOL.

I'M REALLY PROUD TONIGHT TO INTRODUCE OUR COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS COUNSELORS. I'LL INTRODUCE THEM IN A FEW MINUTES HERE. THEY'VE BEEN WORKING CLOSELY TOGETHER OVER THIS PAST SEMESTER AS WE PROVIDE YOU TONIGHT WITH AN UPDATE OF OUR PROGRESS FOR A THROUGH G.

I THINK IT'S FITTING AND APPROPRIATE THAT NEXT WEEK IS NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELORS WEEK, SO WE CAN CELEBRATE THEM AND THE WORK THAT THEY'RE DOING.

FACILITATING AND MONITORING TUTORING AND CREDIT RECOVERY PROGRAMS. HELPING ENROLL STUDENTS IN CREDIT RECOVERY PROGRAMS SO THEY CAN COME BACK TO BEING ON TRACK. OR HELPING THEM FIND RESOURCES TO STAY ON TRACK. AND WE'RE COMMUNICATING WITH TEACHERS AND OTHER COUNSELORS, I USE THE WORD COMPREHENSIVE COUNSELORS. SO WE WORK CLOSELY WITH THE COMPREHENSIVE COUNSELORS ON OUR SCHOOL SITE.

WE WORK AS A TEAM FOR THOSE STUDENTS.

WE'RE THAT EXTRA LAYER OF SUPPORT.

ESPECIALLY THOSE TARGETED POPULATIONS.

WITHIN THAT, WE'VE DONE ELD CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS, AVID DATA SPECIAL EDUCATION CLASSES, AND SPANISH FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS PRESENTATIONS. WHAT WE FOUND IS THAT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT. WHEN WE DID OUR PRESENTATIONS, WE DID PRE-TESTS AND POST-TESTS.

SOME OF OUR POPULATION, OUR 11TH GRADE STUDENTS, ONLY 20 PERCENT OF THEM REPORTED KNOWING WHAT A THROUGH G IS.

WHICH IS SOMETHING TO WORK ON. WE REPORTED THAT OVER 90 PERCENT OF STUDENTS ARE NOW REPORTING THAT THEY KNOW WHAT A THROUGH G IS. THAT IS A HUGE POSITIVE TO START WITH. THIS WAS MADE LAST WEEK, OVER 400 INDIVIDUAL STUDENT MEETINGS REGARDING SPECIFIC TO A THROUGH G AND WE HAVE A THROUGH G FIRST GRADUATION POSTERS UP IN CLASSROOMS TO MAKE IT VISIBLE AND OBVIOUS TO STUDENTS.

WE ARE ENROLLING STUDENTS IN CYBER CLASSES.

COLLABORATING WITH TEACHERS AND OTHER SCHOOL COUNSELORS ON OUR SITE TO MAKE SURE WE'RE SUPPORTING STUDENTS.

WE SEND WEEKLY NEWSLETTERS HOME TO PARENTS AND STUDENTS.
